carpet under AC unit

the almost inevitable tin worm has recently necessitated some welding in the footwell area, and that meant pulling the carpet back. I was vaguely concerned by the fact that it took some force to pull the carpet out from beneath the AC unit. Needless to say I now can't get it back in again.

Is there a trick to this? IIRC someone mentioned that they ended up trimming the carpet to a smaller size because it wouldn't go back in again?

Build date is 4/87 BTW.

cheers

The last time I did this I used a long-bladed screwdriver with a broad, flat end (to avoid punching through the carpet). And an awfully large amount of patience! The trick is to push with the ‘driver whilst moving the carpet back and forth in small increments. OTOH, you could carefully trim it as it should not show once the centre console is back in place!

thanks Pod, that is useful.

I confess, I've made life more difficult for myself by not dismantling the centre console; I just slackened the screws on the side trim and pulled the carpet out from underneath. So this is bound to make the carpet less easy to refit. But the part under the AC unit definitely seems the worst.

Having scratched my head for a while I had concluded that it might be worth making a special prodding tool; something thin with several spikes so that there isn't too much load at any one point.

I'll probably give this a go at some point.

cheers

Brucey, "special prodding tool" carries a greater potential for innuendo than I can deal with!

For what it's worth, the blunt end of a trim removal tool has helped me out with this job - blunt enough not to tear the carpet, but strong enough to give it a shove.
