Audio fader '88 M6

I am replacing my 18 yr. old Sony head unit with a new Alpine Bluetooth unit. As I am also chasing a recurrent background noise, I want to disable/disconnect the orig. dash mounted fader switch. Do I just unplug it, or do I have to sever or disconnect some wires - which ones?
