door locks work some weeks, some weeks they don't

Post by ronnieg »

this is frustrating.... sometimes the electric door lock system stops working for no apparent reason. When they work, both doors and the trunk switch operate perfectly.

When they don't, they all work manually and smoothly.

Is there something that I don't know about that turns the system off? Power battery/drain failure? some system reset in the onboard computer?

checked fuses, are OK. am using the master key.

Ideas?

I might have stumbled on something. when I pulled fuse number 27 and reinserted it, the door locks all started working again. so either the fuse had a poor connection, or pulling it somehow reset the electronics.

Do you have and alarm with auto-unlock?

I have run into an issue where my driver door will not unlock with the key. The tumbler is worn JUST enough that it can't completely push the pin. However, the alarm unlocked it fine until this winter. This winter, the door would not unlock all the way. I took off the door card and lubricated everything by hitting it with solvent first (to loosen up the lithium grease that was still there), then using some synthetic SuperLube grease.

Now it unlocks great with the alarm, but still won't with the key. Looks like I have to replace the tumbler, but the electric unlock is working fine.

Thanks for the thoughts on this. No, I just have the original electric locks. No alarm.

Thanks again.

locks still working after reinstalling that fuse. a month now. it was either loose, or the electronic module somehow reset itself when power was off/on.

Have a look at this:

Mine were also intermittent.

A quick update....

every so often the electric locks stop working for no apparent reason. everything still locks manually, just not electrically.

when I remove the fuse and reinsert it, they always work again. seems something in the control module must get reset when power is removed/returned.... so it's only a minor nuisance to pull and reinsert the fuse.

any experience with this out there?

still doing the same thing..... electric door locks just stop working. If I remove and reinsert the fuse into the box, they all work properly again......for a while.

all the wiring looks intact, nothing loose, nothing obvious.

any thoughts or ideas?

Poor connectivity even though the wiring is all intact and connected. Most of these electrical connections heve not been moved in 30 years. Corrosion has a way of impeding connections. It could be temperature related or just such a poor connection that it will work initially after putting the fuse in place but slowly deteriorate after that until connectivity is broken and you have no response to input. I have been on a mission to spray electrical contact cleaner all over my cars due to sporadic and intermittent electrical problems. It doesn't hurt anything and has actually fixed several problems much easier than replacing parts.

There is a central control unit for the electrical locks. Sorry but memory fade keeps me from telling you where it is. Hopefully someone else with a better memory can help with location.

Thanks, Ralph. will try to track down as many connections as I can.

The control unit is somewhere under the dash up behind the glove box, I think. Sill check those connections too.

Additional suggestions are welcome. . .

Merry Christmas to all!
