I have never seen a UK car that didn't have the white hexagon already fitted both front and rear.

Yes. Made no difference. The cables and tubes are a solid mass of rust. Nothing moves.

Looks like its time for some replacement work then! Have you had corrosion problems with the sunroof surround as well?

I haven't seen this mentioned over the years. But since getting into Beemer airhead motorcycles some of the tool kits will come with the small red reversible screw driver. You can sometimes find the whole tool kit for less than what you'd pay for a single screw driver. Not all have the red, but they're out there.
