Ellipsoid low beam wiring- Going from 3 wire '87 to 2 wire

Post by dm635 »

I've searched and will do more. Have found much discussion converting to Ellipsoid, but wiring to the low beam is not really clarified.

The issue on going from 3 wire-dual sealed beam filament low beam to the 2 wire low beam ellipsoid is operation of the low beam. Turning on the headlights low beam it works as it should. However, as noted in many posts, when going to high beam or flash to pass the low beam goes out. The main reason for this conversion other than cosmetic is I live in the country where I need all lights working. DJ's '89 does better than my sealed beam setup in lighting up these dark roads.

I have and can read the schematics in my '87 ETM, but need to know a fix that works. Just to keep the low beams on when switching to high and flash to pass. Also I have no issues splicing and soldering. Fortunately electrical is not my weak suit, can do wiring. I completely know & understand the stock wiring on the 'ol E24. But I don't to guess and let the smoke out of my wires going to high beam.

I'd appreciate the known fix. Thanks Dave

PS: I know the Ellipsoid conversion is not the cure all for turning night to day way out here in the country, but they are an improvement over sealed beam. I even went with the yellow Bosch fog lights for a while just for a cosmetic change and man that sucked in the dark. Did give everything a cute yellow tint at night. They are for sale if anyone wants a set. $50 and are plug & play into the high beam connector with trim rings. PM on those.

I think forum member MisterFixit sells a simple plug and play wiring harness to fit the fuse box, which accomplishes what you need. Why not send him a PM?
