Front windows wont roll all the way down

Post by Hawaiicruz »

I recently picked up my 635 and found this great forum. My problem is neither of my front windows goes all the way down. The drivers stays up about 1" and passenger about 1/2 ". I searched and found threads on adjustments but I couldn't find anything about my particular problem.
I figured before I tear into it maybe somebody has had a similar problem or could point me in the right direction
Thank you in advance.

I'm not sure. I was just planning on flipping it, but of course after driving it I'm starting to fall under it's spell. I just started going through the car. It has had a respray at some point. It has a small rust spot on the left rear fender and some bondo on the right rear below the trim piece. musty smell in the trunk. I'm guessing I will find more as I dig deeper. At some point this car was well cared for. It's very clean and appears to have many newish parts. So it's like that song "getting to know you"

I remember decades ago, living on Oahu, I had a first-year Plymouth Baracuda that you could look right thru the rear hatch, the trunk floor and see the ground underneath.

Interesting in that I just noticed that both the front windows on my early E12 based car don't drop below the level of the door . When fully open they are still about 1.5 inches above the scraper seal.
It certainly sounds as if they are reaching the end stop of the guides and the movement is fluid .
When I refitted the door cards there was no battery in the car so although all the guides ,spindles and drives were cleaned and lub'd I never ran them up and down , then .

Should they be below the trim and inside the doors ?

Mine stick up a tad above the seal at the rear end of the front door. Not much though.

If you do some research, you'll find a history of this issue.
I've read many places that the greenhouse, being taller
than below the upper edge of the door and the room
needed to hide the window, didn't allow BMW to roll the
window all the way to hiding it in the door.
I'm not sure if it was this way for every single six though.
My Buster has the same issue; anyone else?

I suggest that you not try any window adjustment till
you get more responses to this issue?

For instance, if you like the ride/handling now, check your front suspension for loose upper and lower arms.
If they're loose, you'll go crazy when you feel the difference! I know I did!
Of course you'll need a four wheel alignment right away.
Good luck,,,,Greg

My front windows have the same issue since day 1 (30 odd years ago).

I just measured and both front windows are 1/2" above the seals (measuring from the outside).

None of the windows go fully flush on either of my E24s ('84 633 and '85 635). They stick up about 3/8" when fully retracted. I've thought about adjusting them down, but was firmly advised against messing with the adjustments, since all of them work....they may not after fiddling with them.

Just checked the Garage Queen. Exposes about a half inch above the rubber wipe strip. Never bothered me before.

My 1980 635 windows stick up at least an inch (never measured) when they're all the way down. Makes putting your arm on the window sill kind of annoying. Previous owner said thats just the way these cars are.

My rear window only goes down like 60 percent on both sides, I assume thats normal too?
