Steve came round at the weekend complete with a very good idea:
If you've got the rear lights out of the car, you can release the torsion springs and simply place the bootlid on the rubber in exactly the place you want it, then reach in through the light appertures to affix the bootlid mounting bolts. Any up/down adjustment can then be carried out with the lid in the correct horizontal planes.
As it happened, I ended up taking my nice and shiny re-painted hinges back out, because I had bashed them too far in trying to counter the "normal" bending which causes the hinge to go over centre.
This means the "right" strength of torsion bar is now installed, along with some old hinges.
As per project thread, this took all of my time and patience on a Saturday, but with two of us it took 25 minutes!
Thanks Steve!

When unbolting a panel from a hinge, drill a small hole in the hinge through to the panel first. When re installing, stick a drill bit in the hole, and all of the panels will bolt up in the original position they were in.
