Hood Vent grille filters?

Post by songzunhuang »

Ok, I have a birch tree at my house. It drops all kinds of little seedlets and many of them go right into the fresh air vent on my e24. When I turn on the fan, I get a flurry of little birch seedlets spewed into the interior. It's a bit annoying.

When removing my hood foam the other day I noticed something interesting about the vertical grill air intakes. On the underside, it looks like there are holes for screws. Was there a filter or some kind of grille available that covered up the vertical vent holes? A screen here would prevent odd debris from entering the fresh air vent.

I didn't see anything in realoem. Anyone ever seen anything here?
Was there something that screwed into these holes?

No filters, but there are little plastic screens that go there. They do help keep stuff out. There is also a rain deflector that goes on the driver's side. A member just supplied me with one. I have been remiss in repaying him with some higher output LED bulbs for his tail lights in exchange. I really need to get that done. Sorry Roger.

If you can find a suppliers, the grilles are parts #11 and #12 at the link below. I don't have a part number for the rain deflector.

Honestly, I think you could just get some expanded sheet metal/aluminum and just make something on your own for WAY less than what it might cost to find the trim pieces.

The plastic grills are rather fragile. Perhaps there is a wire mesh alternative to keep the junk out.

Attached are photos of the rain deflector.
I had ordered the plastic grills from Ralph in soca and a rain deflector came with the grills, I now had two deflector so one went to Jose.

The rain defector goes on the drivers side of LH drive cars, it minimizes the water hitting the wiring going into the bulkhead. Don't know a where on RH drive cars.

Same place on RHD cars (on the L/H side). There doesn't appear to be anything to fit the other side (R/H).

You can just see it in pic. below in the top L/H corner.

Thanks for the pics - new to me!

Personally, I have used an old Aluminium Chinese take-away container, turned upside-down to achieve the same result. Only temporary, but it works albeit in a rather less attractive manner

That rain deflector is getting some traveling done!! From CA to NC and now back to CA.

I hope Roger doesn't think bad of us here in CA. Jose has been remiss and I have also. Sorry Roger - you will get taken care of shortly. Just focused on some personal issues for the next 2 weeks.

IIRC when the rain guard has come up in conversation before, no one has ever found a part number for it...??

Is this (still) the case?

BTW one scheme I have been toying with is the idea of having external covers over the grilles. These could be scoop shaped perhaps, so that they still let the air in OK, but I'm not sure if they would work best if the opening was forwards or rearwards facing (forwards facing seems obvious, but the air pressure over the car near the windscreen isn't as you might expect).

Has anyone seen anything like this? I'm sick to death of cleaning all the crud out of the scuttle (lots gets in even though the plastic grille is intact) and in addition one of my wings (fenders) is starting to rot out form the inside, courtesy of the waterfall behind it every time it rains....

cheers

I remember looking at the part and not finding any part numbers on it at all. But my eyes are old and lazy so don't trust my experience.

BTW the grills are available new for a decent price and realoem still does not list the Rain Guard.

I just noticed Jose put up the same exact link previously. DUH!!

Perfect! I was looking in the wrong place. I thought it would be listed with the hood pieces. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I made some filters some time back using a role of filter material I sourced online. Simple and effective.

That looks good and simple; I might just get some of that - is it cooker hood filter foam?

That's brilliant! That'd keep the pecan tree junk out of my scuttles, something that normally goes right through the plastic grills.

I've been meaning to cut some screen to put in there but the filter looks like it will keep everything out!

I was looking for a washable, reuse able filter that would keep tiny leaves and pollen out. I always end up at McMaster Carr for stuff like this and found a suitable pre filter material in a small inexpensive roll. It is rated to "MERV 4" which I looked up. Perfect for this application. The small roll is enough to make several. The material is blue. I dusted it with black spray paint so it does not stand out.

'Tis I and no other.

Vacuumed works. I have taken mine out, but it really is not nessasary very often for me.

Paul was thinking there might be a bigger response to Monterey, but don't count out a gathering this year. It would be nice to see everyone again.
