BMW 635CSI Seals

Post by TomMan7531 »

Hey,

Just bought my first 1987 BMW 635 and taking delivery on Saturday so very excited and of course, hello all :)

But one of the immediate issues I need to sort is the seals, the interior has signs of moisture and the boot is letting water in (no rust thank god)

This needs sorting ASAP and I have a good idea on how to fit new seals but what I need to know is do they have to model specific or can you buy rolls of any seals and cut them to size, I have linked an ebay listing for a passenger door seal which to me seems expensive for just one door but maybe this is fair, has anyone else had to replace the seals?

P.S. I'm in the UK, if that makes any difference.

Thanks.

Hi Tom,

Welcome!

The seals can be a real pain. I bought brand new for my M rebuild, but ended up re-using what was already there, so don't write them off too soon.

Do find out where the leak is -
The main engine harness on the driver's side bulkhead and the other loom on the left are prime candidates,
the scraper seals (the seals at the bottoms of the front and rear windows) are notorious for cracking and being generally useless (although they won't directly affect the interior).
Look out for a rusty hole at the rear of the front wheel arch
Look out for holes in the front of the floorpan/the "lifting pad" (the square bit at the bottom of the front wheelarch_
Check sunroof drains are clear
Check screens aren't leaking.

I dare say you've checked most of these already and I dare say there's more.

Incidentally, the door seals aren't too bad to re-fit if there's two of you. I use turtlewax shampoo and wax for just about all of the "make difficult things fit" jobs on the car - accept no substitute! People often comment on how nice my rear bushes smell, as an added bonus!

Please PM if you need a hand with anything - you aren't a million miles from Cheltenham.

Cheers,

Rob

Oh, and the boot is a ridiculous condensation trap, but it is likely you've got a leak from the rear light seals. Boot seal needs a look too. I keep a re-usable dessicant bag in the boot and dry it out in the oven when my wife's out for a few hours.
