Euro Front Bumper fitment on E12

Post by Sechserreihe »

Hi all,
I'm in the middle of a Euro transformation on my 1980 E12 635Csi. I took the interior and running gear out of my rusty ''78 Euro spec 635Csi and placed it into a rust free roller from Georgia. Lots of work but it's been fun.

An unforeseen issue I ran into is the front bumper not slipping into place as it should. I've done a front Euro bumper conversion before on an '85 E24 back in my San Diego days and it was pretty straightforward as I can recall. Now I'm running into an issue with the bumper riding much higher than it should when I go to push it into the two channels it rides in. It looks to me that the US spec E12 cars had some extra steel bracing welded in place to fit the bumper shocks. It certainly looks that way. The Euro car the bumper came out of has since been hauled to the bone yard, so I can't compare the two.

Wanted to check with the forum to see if that's the case before I start cutting away.

Thanks,

Mark

Columbus, oH

Update

Got it figured out. I was lucky enough to find my old Euro 6 in the junkyard. Took some pix of the mounting points and yes, they are different.

I marked the areas to be cut with a sharpie. Not all that bad after all.

When you cut your shock supports, could you cut them perfect and sell me them? I need the shock support

Hi,

Sorry but I pretty much butchered the factory US bumper supports with a cutting wheel. The whole process turned out great. I'm ready for my Euro stripe application on lower part of spoiler.

Hi Mark,
Project looks great.
How did you get that shine on the bumper?
Thanks, Roger

Hi Roger,
I'm real happy how the bumper turned out. A lot of hard work went into prepping the car for paint. The Chrome was in surprisingly good condition and came back to a nice shine with just a little bit of chrome polish and elbow grease. I'll apply the euro stripe to the lower spoiler and it really sets it off nicely.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark, Nice work you are doing on this car. Same color as my 79 635. I just thought I would point out that the tow hook you left in the euro shell should unbolt if its not too rusted in there, and is a cool euro only detail worth keeping for your bumper conversion. Not sure if its actually still available, realoem says it is.

I'd grab that if I was you.
