Refinishing the Roundels

Post by GRNSHRK »

Gents, picked up this cool set of Cloisonné Roundels from orval2, we basically traded these for those funky 80's sunglasses that he just had to have, to complete his 80's outfit #-o

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=29763

These are aftermarket, but to my surprise they are actually overlaid onto the existing Roundels with a metallic layer that's perhaps 1 mm thick :-k

What I am thinking about trying is to remove the existing clear coated standard Roundel emblem and fit these in, somehow, and clear coat them [-o<

I know, sounds like a stretch, but hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained \:D/

So, thoughts on this process :-"

Oh, if this is even possible, I will need a trunk Roundel, preferably not in great shape :-&

I have a couple of spare fronts that have chipped clear coat, so I'm good to go there :-({|=

TIA

I think removing the old ones intact will be your biggest challenge. Is the glue letting go already? Once they are off, you can use some good panel bonding adhesive and I think they would stay put. Although panel bonding adhesive is pretty expensive.

Let me see what I can find Bobbo. I have lots of roundels but the e24 rear has an extreme curve.

Use dental floss to get under the roundel to remove it. You probably already know though.

Hey Ralph, yes, that would be great =D>

I know the rear Roundels are not common due to the curvature :-?

I actually do have a spare, but it's glued to my valve cover #-o

And I know how to get them off the car without damaging the paint, what I am trying to find out is how to get the Roundel itself separated from the base, so that I can glue in the Cloisonné versions :-k

Since I don't need a pristine one, I'm sure whatever you find may be better than I need

Thanks again Ralph
