Jacking point blind plug.

Post by plip1953 »

Even after 25 years of ownership, today I discovered something on the car that I'd never come across before!

In the centre of the sill jacking point there is a small circular recess and that contains a black plastic plug covering what looks very much like a short section of threaded tube. Can anyone tell me what this for, if anything? The diameter almost looks big enough to accommodate a toe hook, although clearly it would make any sense to screw it into there.

Hi Phil, IIRC the threaded pipe was used by the factory. Threaded rollers would be stalled in order to move the car along the floor in the assembly process. I did a search but came up empty, I recall reading about. Roger

Thanks Roger, that makes sense.

It did occur to me see if I could have something fabricated that screws in and acts as a jacking point or for axlestands - and therefore avoids any need for anything to ever again contact the sill seams.

Very interesting. I've never noticed that either. Seems strange that BMW didn't include an adaptor in the toolkit to aid jacking at these locations?

Sorry for the poor quality pic, but you can just see the coarse thread.
