Euro headlight adjustment option

Post by eko1 »

My 84 has the headlight adjustment option. You can point the headlights up or down from within the cabin. It is a knob on the lower dash to the left of the steering wheel. I need the cover plate that shows the positions.

Please let me know if you have this piece. Thanks.

I think this is the part. I'm sure I've got a spare somewhere. Might take a while to find it!!

-a fairly common option on UK cars, especially the later highline ones. In principle it is a simple hydraulic system, in practice it leaks and fails with great ease....

IMOE if you see a random 6er with this system, it is 90% likely to not be working. If it is working, someone has most likely recently slaved over it.

BMW should have learned, but they fitted an electrically powered hydraulic system to various things on later cars, e.g. the boot (trunk) release on E65s. Another system that fails with monotonous regularity despite higher grade components....

cheers

Thanks Brucey. "How is it activated" was going to be my next question. I've seen the MBZ vacuum actuated units and they're apparently reliable.

Hope you find what you need Eric.

It's a sealed hydraulic system (anti-freeze I think) that operates a push/pull effect on an actuator on each low beam light unit. The plastic pipes go brittle after a while and it loses

all the fluid. It is NOT repairable (I've tried various methods) and the whole unit has to be replaced. Somewhere on here is a write-up I did on the replacement procedure.

Here is the complete system.
