Thanks for the reply, yes I am trying to keep it original but at least there are alternative options if all else fails. I have not given up hope just yet of finding an E28 or E34 M5 box to take the input shaft out of.

That is not the case .... but they are very close. The 280 is built to handle 280 in Nm torque. The 265 is built to handle 265 in Nm.GripGreg wrote:I agree with Ed & Jose`.

I have several friends who have converted to a 265 because they cannot
obtain parts for (or a used replacement 280) for their M635 E24's. I know of no problems due to the slight difference in torque handling capability.

Please correct me if the following is wrong, as it's all based on what people have told me over the years.
The 260/6 is the poor relation and the weakest of the available options.
My understanding is that the 265/6 (i.e. the overdrive box) is the strongest. That's what I've got in my 635.
The 265/5 (the dogleg close-ratio box) suffers from synchromesh wear (as well as being a bit annoying, despite the cool ratios, on account of missing an overdrive gear to cruise around in and being a bit hit-and-miss going 1st to 4th instead of 1st to 2nd). I had one of these in my M535i and do not miss it.
The 280 appears to be great, and mine works fine in the M, but I thought they were a bit fragile?
Please educate me if the above is wrong, I'm currently trying to source a spare 265 for the M in case the 280 goes bang!
Either way, if you do find a 265 you'll have stiff competition from E-type owners, Opel Monza fans and E9 owners wanting five speeds! Oh yes, you'll need a different prop, too.

I had a '67 911S Porsche with the dogleg 5 spd.
I never had an issue shifting from 1st & going into 4th once I drove it for about a week!
It was my daily driver for about 6 years.
But then, those were my racing days and although I never put it on the track, I kept it in mind.
I loved driving it!
My info is that it's a racing tranny, which means once rolling you'll never need first gear till you stop.
Which I guess is why it's geared lower too.

There is a bit of history to my 280/5 box. After seven trouble free years it developed notching going into third gear, I changed the oil for Redline MT90, after a while the notching progressed to changing down from third to second.
I removed the box and it was the syncros that were worn, but also the constant changing gear without effective synchromesh caused damage to the second and third gears. Also damaged, as Jose rightly said, were the selector forks.
I had new selector forks, gears and synchromesh fitted all round. This was fine for two years when it developed an oil leak from what I thought was the output shaft seal, the seal was changed by an independent BMW specialist, still leaked at the rear of the box, changed the selector shaft seal, still leaking at the back, changed the drive shaft flange, still leaking from some where.
I decided to remove the box to get to the bottom of this. I took the box to 'All Gears' who specialise in Getrag gearboxes and also did the gearbox repair, he noticed immediately that a core plug was missing from the casing adjacent to the drive shaft and causing the leak.
This core plug fills the hole from the selector rod drilling in the casing and was probably disturbed while fitting the new selector forks.
I had the box stripped while it was out to check for damage as when the oil was drained there was evidence of steel particles in the oil. This turned out to be from the input shaft gears.
Hence I would like to keep my refurbished 280/5 gearbox and just replace the damaged items.

Hell yeah that's expensive!
Metric Mechanic (and most other places) won't even work on them at all. They recommend swapping out to a 265, but the kit from MM is the same price as the rebuild from Korman.
Nothing is cheap when you are talking about the unique and "rare" bits for an M6.

I really like the dogleg in my m635. With the 3.73 it was hilarious. I put a 3.45 in now and it cruises much better. The 3.25 ratio will be an option also.
I have a 420g 6 spd box which I'm thinking of converting to the m30 platform but I really like the dogleg. Then tight ratios keep the m88 on the boil and if u drive it like an old 4spd with an under drive first it works fine.
