yes, been drooling over it but it's about 10k over my budget! very nice motor indeed..

I like these 2 but they are a long way away and I want to make sure a car is right before commiting to a day out and a tank of fuel used.. can't find much history on the red one and it's done 173k...

Both cars look very nice, but if you're not an experienced E24 owner, I'd encourage an independent inspection before purchase. I'm also unsure of the miles on the eBay car, as it states 173. Is that 173,000? Are you sure you want a car with an auto trans?

yes it will be 173000 miles, 105k more than the blue one! every one I've seen has been an auto, good thing I like autos! I know they drink fuel but I've already accepted the fact I won't get much better than 10-12mpg and it's not my main car so not an issue..

thanks, Mark.

Interesting to hear from others but driving sensibly I'm getting 26 mpg from my 3 speed auto , admittedly at less that motorway speeds ( 'cause there ain't none down here ) but the 4 speed should be well suited to that .
I completed another mountain run yesterday ,did 105 miles on all sorts of roads ( and tracks  ) and as close as I can calculate without brimming the tank that's what it did and that was after a couple of "exercises" with an E type .
So unless your a hooligan you may be pleasantly surprised.

very interested in mpg as I read a review and the guy got 17mpg from a tank full, bearing in mind most of my driving will be tootling around town and to work and back I'm expecting horrific mpg! 20mpg would be bliss!

reliability is far more than important than mpg hence wanting a good example.

Best I ever got was 36mpg, driving like a very frightened granny at no more than 56mph on the motorway as the back end steered itself from lane to lane. I was, fortuitously enough, on the way to Fritz's Bits to have the rear bushes done!

On a more miserable note, unless you buy a very good one to start with, petrol is unlikely to be your main expense until you've replaced all of the "consumables" and dealt with rust / paint issues.

It's definitely, definitely all worth it though,

You need to know that these cars are not cheap to run, nor are they necessarily particularly reliable - unless loads of ££££s are thrown at them (and then you have no guarantees!). The youngest E24s are now over 25 years old and I do not consider that they are suitable to use as a daily driver. If you are concerned about running costs and reliability and you are not competent to work on your own vehicle, you should consider buying a newer model.

Just my 2c

It's not going to be a daily driver and I'm competent at working on cars as that's all I've ever done but I have a BM specialist close to me so that's a bonus if ever I'm stuck..

I'll just have to bide my time and buy the best I can afford and hope I don't buy a lemon! My previous classic was a Stag and was a money pit so I'm used to things going wrong and also have a sense of humour!!

Ah! You've been through the pain of BL ownership! Sand left in the waterways from the casting process? You won't have to worry about that in the BMW!

The E24 is a paragon of reliability in comparison: you'll love it.

I owned an early Stag once. Never again! The front brake pads delaminated half way down to The Classic Le Mans - so I had to drive the rest of the way there (and back again!) with no effective front brakes. Certainly taught me a bit about reading the road ahead

thinking about viewing this, it's the right colour/trim but wanted some opinions (already checked the mot history!) mileage seems OK but there is a small small gap in history so don't know what happened there? looks like it's had some paint done..

only thing worrying me as it's been through several auction houses and ends up for sale on ebay a few months later, call me suspicious but can't help being paranoid about these things!

I would take the view that, even though Rons car is 10K above your limit, you ARE going to spend that with just about ANY other example just to get it up to scratch. With Rons car, you have the added bonus of being able to eat your dinner off the engine !

Now those are words of wisdom indeed. Parts prices have really gone up over here lately - no more bargain Lemforder stuff.

so basically for £10-£12k I'm just going to get a project? oh dear, best start saving!!

I'm not after a show winner just something I can be proud of that is in good condition with no major work pending ie- lots of welding or big mechanical jobs.

if only I could afford it Ron! it almost wants to make me get another project and strip it down completely but I told myself no more projects!! I can appreciate every nut on and bolt on your car as I've been there and done it, the rewards are very satisfying when done right :)

price reflects condition really, front end looks all mangled and has had nearside wing and door painted (and not finished?). not a big fan of the mushroom interior either or the rear spoiler or wheels! I hate to sound picky but for the money I want to spend I could do better..

cheers, Mark.

Most cars will have had paint. The front bumper assembly is usually distorted in this manner. You must appreciate that you are looking at a dealer's car, which will always be more costly - but you do get some statutory protection! If you want cheap(er), look for a private seller, but its a case of caveat emptor.
