1985 BMW 635 CSi power steering pressure hose wanted

Post by Speedracer01 »

Hello, this is my first request for help.

I have a 1985 BMW 635 CSi. The other day while I was idling it in the driveway, a hose, which comes out of the master cylinder sprung a microscopic leak. The majority of power steering or brake fluid sprayed out at high pressure, making my coupe not driveable.

The reason I say power steering and or brake fluid, is that while it swems to be a hose from the brake master cylinder to the proportioning valve, all of my power steering fluid sprayed out, while the brake fluis in the clear reservoir, remained at normal level.

I will try to take some good pictures and maybe someone here can help me find out what hose it is.

It is a metal line, crimped to a rubber hose and crimped to metal line again. It comes out of the back of the master cylinder upwards (metal), then bends forward by the brake fluid reservoir (rubber part), then continues to the front of the car (metal part) with a long metal u-turn and connects to the back of what looks like a proportioning valve. Hopefully someone recognizes it by my crazy description.

I have never put a part on her that is not a German part (new or used).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

#1 Where the line starts at back of master cylinder by firewall.

#2 The u-turn in the line that goes forward and then backwards again.

#3 The rubber braided part where the pinhole started and now all of the fluid escapes.

#4 Location where the pinhole ocurred.

# 6 Container where the fluid has gone missing.

So, my other question is. Is the power steering fluid and brake fluid somehow connected at some point and then separated at another? Or what is this hose I'm looking at and why has all of the powere steering fluid escaped, (lost power steering), yet the line appears to come from the brake master cylinder? I'm confused.

Why would you even consider a "good used" pressure hose? Take the hose to a local hydraulic service shop and have them rebuild it with the ends or go to our usual suspects: FCP, Bav, eEuroparts, Pelican, Rockauto, etc. Beware the inferior brands, though.

Thank you for your reply Sansouci. I didn't even know that the hose could be rebuilt. I appreciate the direction.

Put the last 7 numbers of your VIN into realoem.com and you will get parts diagrams, part numbers etc. Ignore the prices as they may or may not reflect current msrp. This will help you source new hoses.
Based on those hose clamps, it looks like someone did some work on the brake lines.
Happy hunting!

Personally if you are dealing with brake and power steering hoses, I'd go for new ones. They're still available, I recently replaced one of my power steering hoses.

I do not agree with rebuilding . The factory hi pressure hose as an inline restrictor in it. I haven't heard of a shop that rebuilds hydraulic hoses that has the proper die to crimp the restrictor into the middle of the hose. A new hose should be bought to maintain proper function. This is the only proper way way to replace it. If you go to realoem the hose pictured plainly shows that there is something showing in the middle of the hi pressure hose. this has come up for years on different forums and the answer is always the same. A factory or factory style hose is what should be used.
