WTB Alpina B6 2.8 Crankshaft Position Sensor
Hi all,
I've purchased a 1984 Alpina B6 2.8/1 (#88 of 259) and am having trouble finding a correct CPS. I've posted on all the Alpina sites (US and Germany) as well as MyE28 and other BMW forums. Although the B6 2.8 is an E30, I would like to reach out to this crowd as well for some help since there may be some B7 6 Series members on this forum. I do believe they used the same ignition system.
This crank position sensor is NOT a regular Bosch sensor for the M30 2.8 liter motor which Alpina had stuffed into the engine bay. Alpina had commissioned AFT (Atlas Fahrzeug Technik) for a distributorless ignition system on these cars. This included an AFT black box, ignition module and crank position sensor, ring gear, etc. Some race cars such as the Ford Escort RS 1600 and Ford Capri 2.8i also used a similar set-up.
The problem I'm having is that I'm missing this AFT sensor completely. Someone had installed a Bosch CPS thinking it would work but it does not. The car will start and stumble for about 7 seconds and die. The Bosch sensor just doesn't pick up and send the correct signals this special AFT system requires.
I've reached out to Alpina and they of course no longer have a CPS. Both Alpina US and in Deutschland. They did tell me that AFT manufactured them, and so I did some research. AFT has since been bought a few times, now owned by Schaeffler-Engineering. I've made contact with Schaeffler and they said they needed some good pictures of this sensor to see what they can dig up if anything.
So....does anyone happen to have one of these AFT sensors they could snap photos of? Perhaps one of you has an Alpina 2.8 on an engine stand or tucked away in a corner. Or know of someone who does. Of course I would be very willing to purchase a sensor if one is around.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post. I definitely need some help on this one.
Best,
Mark

You could also try Addam from Bavarian Classics and Restorations. He's done a few Alpina's and seems to know his stuff very very well.

Re: WTB Alpina B6 2.8 Crankshaft Position Sensor
After thoroughly cleaning the flywheel ring gear, I discovered the shielded tooth that sets off the signal for the AFT Crank Position Sensor. It has a tiny piece of gold colored mu-metal micro welded onto it.
I still haven't had any luck finding an AFT sensor or anyone being able to send me a picture of one that I can forward to Scheffler-Engineering (formerly AFT). They've asked for some pictures of the sensor to be able search their NOS parts bins.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. I reached out to DjMink on the M5Board but looks like his last post was back in 2015. I'm not so sure he's very active. Hope he gets the message. If you happen to have his contact info outside the M5board, perhaps you could share or give him a heads up.
Thanks,
Mark

Re: WTB Alpina B6 2.8 Crankshaft Position Sensor
Found that elusive AFT Crank Position Sensor!
After looking on Ebaylokal.de (basically Ebay's version of Craigslist in Germany), I reached out to a guy who was selling some Alpina B6 stuff. I shot him a note if he happened to have some AFT ignition items, specifically the sensor. After some searching in his parts stash, he found one and it looks to be in excellent condition. He had purchased it for a project that never came to fruition.
I'll keep everyone posted once I get it in my hands and installed.
Thanks,
Mark
