Tried that. Problem is the part # is the same for all years and you get the later version with the flat sockets.

This switch is actually for my car . Ron had came to the rescue sending me a couple of switches over but unfortunatley they were of the later rectangular shape . Interestingly in the link below it states that that part number fits cars to '89 .
On my series one it has a circular button with a multitude of round pin connections ,complete with resistor , on the back.
Item 9
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/en/showparts ... Id=61_0705

I have found several write ups on the rectification of this seemingly common problem all of which seem straight forward .
I would rather have a spare switch at hand though as my switch , unlike the ones shown in the how to's , has six retaining tabs around the circumference of the switch body making it very difficult to "unlatch " them all at once to gain access into the innards.
If any of the tabs break and it prevents the two halves locking together it disconnects the turn signal circuits . The position of the button whilst in retention is quite precise to connect all the terminals internally .
It currently has a suitable tooth pick wedged in at the correct depth to maintain all the circuits connected ( work !) ......
So if anyone has an operational switch It would solve my problem.
Thanks

Well after some lengthy searching I've found one supplier in CT USA and some squiggly place in Japan . And that's it .
It seems part number 61311359948 also fits ( 61311361825 shown in OEM ) so am awaiting reply from CT .

Thanks Ralph .
The two suppliers I located in USA would not supply to Ireland stating it was to do with EU privacy rules ....?
I eventually found that my local MD could get me the first part number ,9948, for the princely sum of €30 so I took the gamble on the 630 model part number being compatible with the wiring on my 635. The part has arrived from Germany and I hope to collect it tomorrow from them.
Ron also came to the rescue in finding a batch of them in his (better than main dealer) parts store after I gave him a better and more accurate description of the part .
So it seems the issue is solved.
Once I fit the replacement I'll find a way to dismantle the original and retension the spring tabs that cause the problem.
Thank you all for your help , again .

A post script to this .

As I said I ordered switch 61311359948 which was /is for the 630 model according to real OEM from my local main dealer at price of €30 .
It is the correct one for my series one although not the one listed for my '81 635 .
Slightly different decal on front but the facia has the correct grain and colour .
All in all a reasonable price for it.

Ah ha...
No good , correct switch but for lhd dash .
The surround is reverse shape for my rhd car and does not fit the aperture.
I attempted to dismantle the switch but the two halves are held together by six moulded tapered wedges which are impossible to overcome without damaging the body .
Ho hum....... :(
