Looks like it's well made; how much clearance is there for the fan? Are you able to R&R the fan without removing the radiator? Also, are you able to use the stock fan shroud without modifications?

It is well made. Yes, the fan can be removed with the rad in place.
I remove the bushings that bolt to the front panel and re-bolt without the bushings
to squeeze more room between fan and rad.

Fan shroud needs no fabrication, bolts on as stock.

Hello, is this still available? I am picking up my 81 Euro tomorrow and will be doing (attempting) a 5 speed swap. Thanks to Tom, the car is in overall excellent mechanical shape, but the radiator is said to be old...

Carl, Im sort of interested in this, but the mounting methods for the early e12 cars are completely different compared to the later cars. Those tabs welded to the sides of the rad would interfer with the mounting brackets that are on early cars? No? And the tabs with the slots on the bottom of the rad would stop the rad from sliding into the channel for the rad on early chassis, just curious.

I've manged to get a Wizard #1-949-500 rad for '87/8 M5/6 during the Covid shutdown, across the border and into my garage. I've been working on fitting it for a while and decided to check Big Coupe for advice. I searched and found Carlp336's posting and his reference to gaining clearance. Looks like I'll need to do that too.

I have a quarter inch less clearance than required to mount the fan. I do want to try and retain a bit of flex in those mounts so I'll try and search through my collection of bit & pieces for some suitable parts. This is a bit annoying, especially considering the price - $800 CDN to my door.

What I decided to do is cut the existing mounts by about 3/16" on the back sides and trim the steel locking bushing by the same amount. That allowed me the room to squeeze the fan onto the shaft and tighten it up leaving me a comfortable finger-width of clearance on the bottom side of the fan. Should be OK. Still a little annoyed that I had to fettle my own fix rather than a bolt on solution...
