1988 M6 for sale

Post by red5nic »

Hey guys,

Life issues force me to put my M6 up for sale.

I have finished mechanically restoring the car (all BMW parts) and its consigned locally here in Ft Lauderdale. Car is completely original, no mods. You can see all the pics at motorcar gallery ft lauderdale website. The car is red with lotus white interior. Wheels are period correct refinished 16x8 BBS 3 piece that Ralph in SoCal (member here) sold to me :-) Car is cool because it was an early 88 and made it off the line with the "hi-line" all leather dash and upper panels (hence why I have left interior original). Mileage 96000. Price is $49500. (much more than that has been invested) This is killing me but I really hope someone here buys it so that it will be preserved and possibly taken to events (which was my intent).

I'll check this intermittently if someone wants to contact me and chat more about the car.

Thanks,
Jake

Sorry about upside down pic. Not tech savvy.

Not sure if i can post link to other website with a lot of pics where it is consigned? If I can, let me know and I'll paste the link.

Feel free to communicate and make a deal with me here- PM me and we can also establish phone contact if you prefer. I will clearly be paying a commission to consigner no matter what but I enlisted them because I don't have time and don't want the responsibility of dealing w the transaction paperwork. (I am really good at buying but have little or no experience on the selling end-haha)

May want to check your asking price. Market for these in the US are not quite there yet. I wish they were.

Examples... https://bringatrailer.com/search/1988+m6/

I would include more pictures and detailed maintenance records. My .02 cents..

Appreciate the feedback. Agree the car market all around seems a little slow.

Just to follow up on brickwhite's comment, there are 50 or so detailed pics at motorcar gallery Ft Lauderdale website as i noted in my original post. I am happy to take the time to provide records (back to original owner) and discuss the car with folks in the market to buy.

As for my asking price, I would simply say that this car was purchased in the price range of those BAT auctions and the difference with mine is that once the compression and leak down checked out on the engine, I gave a blank check to start at the radiator and end at the exhaust replacing everything w/oem whether it needed it or not.

I didn't do this to get my money back but simply because I love the cars and I know that as time goes on new parts will continue to disappear and become NLA (some already are). I also encourage folks to buy one of those BAT cars and do the same as me (but you will spend more than mine costs ) because I am all about these sharks being around for a long time :D

For full disclosure- Non-OEM are the wheels (but 6 TRX's are available including 2 NOS wheels), brake calipers were powder coated gold after rebuild (not zinc/cad), brake lines upgraded to stainless, and the exhaust is B&B stainless steel exhaust. Also, have a full set of Lotus White hides available but as I said, I did not do the interior bc the original is in good shape and the hi-line on an 88 is cool.

Hope this helps and am available to answer questions...

Bump for a beautiful M6 in my favorite color combo. This is one I'd be looking for if only I had room for more cars and fewer familial obligations at the moment...

Shame you have to sell the M6, but if it comes down to selling either that or the 328, well, I can understand. Life happens to us all.

I do agree that more pics (including underside) and records would help sell it.

Thanks for the comments and thanks for posting the link to pics (didn't now if I was allowed to do that). The car is great and I will try an itemize the list of new parts/post records in the coming week.

As for the 89 328. It won a platinum award at Cavallino in Palm Beach and is an amazing car. Unfortunately, it may be on the chopping block too since my life issue is a divorce (don't wish it on anyone).

Cars, when all is said and done JZ, are only material possessions. I got divorced some 20 years ago when I owned my first 635csi. Had to get rid of it for the same reasons. I have another one now, along with it's stablemate,my very rapid E46 M3. Time will heal all.

FYI, the problem with these engines isn't regarding compression and leak down, but age and potential failure of plastic of timing components. Without this in depth service, you won't get the premium you are asking.

Thanks again for the nice replies. Truly appreciated.

Thanks tshultz, I am familiar with the M6 and timing components but the point in my post was that a compression and leak down is basic, simple, and a starting point before committing to go through the entire car. I liked the good ownership history, interesting interior for an 88, and I bought it sight unseen and had it shipped directly to the shop I had help me. Once compression and leak down checked out, we began the work. I really want this to go to an enthusiast. I called the shop today. Rather than just dump a bunch of receipts on everyone to sort out, the shop said they would like to take my file and put together a more professional compilation of the work they did. I'll see what they give me and post here when I get it (they said later next week?).

And, I will sincerely add that if there is something critical that I missed in my mechanical restore- feel free to make a lower offer accounting for the oversight or we can negotiate for me to pay and have it done for you. It's really about the cars for me.

saw a show yesterday(can't recall source) on cable T.V where an older gentlemen goes around the country finding vehicles for his clients. He found a Red 1988 BMW M6(U.S Spec) with 6,500k original miles. M6 was in new mint condition and was taken to an auction which sold for $95k U.S dollars.

Anything is possible! Good luck!

The show is "Chasing Classic Cars". Wayne Carini is the gentleman that owns F-40 Motorsports and does the "chasing". I was disappointed in that episode because unlike 90% of the cars he gets, he wasn't shown driving this one after his shop crew got it running.

that was the one, thanks for the input and confirmation! I will agree, they should have drove around and showed the car for the audience, considering the rarity these days. Probably did not want to expose it to the elements or risk his investment. Sure look purty though.

Hey all,

Just a bump to let you know all timing components were in good order but went ahead and replaced all parts per tshultz' suggestion. Attached some pics b/c pics are always nice :-) First one is the old parts.

GLWS, you may have to consider. Bringatrailer or enthusiast auto group to get your asking price. Sounds like it is ready to go for the next owner!
