Crystal gets a new pair of shoes

Post by Ed Lyerly »

I was finally able to get the tires swapped from the Alpina wheels to the set of Hartge wheels I purchased recently. The Hartge wheels are 17x8.5 et13.
I'm pretty happy with the way they look on Crystal. Let me know what you think.

They look great. But I'd have to say, looking at the side by side, the ALPINAs you had on Crystal looked AWESOME! JMHO. Get those ALPINAs touched up and back on Crystal.

I still love those Hartge Classics especially on a Euro E28.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm a bit of a "wheel whore" and since that is one of the things you can change without being frowned upon too much by the 6er purists ..... it is a neat way to individualize your car.
I agree that the Alpina wheels look better (IMHO) than these Hartge wheels. Perhaps if I had purchased a 3 piece set of Hartge's .... like Renaud (orval2) has on his M635, they would have been better competition :D
That said ..... and while the refinishing of these Alpinas is underway, I have a couple more sets (told you I was a wheel whore) that I hope to try out.
Here is a teaser

Thank you :D
Nat Arnold of Atlantic Euro LLC ordered these for me. You can choose the mat color, monogram color, and the color of the edge stitching to suit your taste. You can contact him here: http://atlantic-euro.com/default.aspx

Ed,

Here is my car with the same AC Schnitzer wheels you have. Like you said last year I probably should drop in by about an inch. I would love to get a set of Alpina or BBS wheels.

Fall has moved into winter here in western North Carolina. While I'm waiting for the refinishing of my Alpina wheels, I decided to have some work done on my driver's seat. While I am very pleased with the refreshing of the color of the leather seats using SEM products, the outside of the drivers seat was in pretty bad shape when I did the refinishing last year. The "skin" of the leather was worn through in several places, and some deep cracks were evident ..... as well as some splitting of the outer welting. I used the Leatherique filler in those areas .... but the cracks have reappeared :(
I've decided to replace the leather and the welting on the outisde portions of the seat bottom and back. You can see from the pictures the areas I'm trying to correct.
Also, I've noticed a looseness in the front left corner of the seat which tightening does not correct, so I wanted to sort that out as well. Once the seat was out, turns out that the mounting point at the front left corner of the floorboard was actually broken. Initially, I thought of just having the mounting lug welded back in place .... then I thought about the possibility of burned carpet and wiring (unless I removed the carpet and isolated the wiring). I decided to have a robust plate made which would be located on the back side of the floorboard (where the original mounting lug ripped through) thus spreading the load over a 1" x 4" area instead of the original 1" diameter.
I've included some photos. I'll post some shots of the repaired driver's seat when I get it back from the upholstery shop and have completed any color touch up that needs to be done.

Yesterday I completed the repair of the drivers seat front left mounting point.
The original mounting point had pulled free, and that was revealed when I removed the seat. I installed a steel plate approximately 25 x 100 x 8mm that was drilled and tapped to match the 10mm seat bolt that I removed. I simply attached the repair plate to the backside of the floorboard with some silicone adhesive. This was accomplished by using a long 10mm bolt screwed into the repair plate. I used a rubber band attached to the sun visor bracket to hold the plate in position while the adhesive cured.

I had a couple pictures to add, but I have evidently reached some sort of Upload Quota Limit  ..... I'll try something else

The upholstery shop called today to let me know my repaired seat was ready. When I dropped it off last week, I picked out the best leather match (that was readily available to them) that I could .... knowing that I would still have to respray the new leather with the SEM Products leather color to get if to match the other parts of the seat that I had colored earlier. The job turned out pretty well. I'll do the touch up spray over the next couple days, and post the pictures for comparison.

Seats ready to go back in

Post by Ed Lyerly »

I was able to do some touch-up recoloring on the new seat panels today. Everything went smoothly using the SEM Products color that I previously used on the seats and door panels. I'm going to let the seat dry/cure in my den for a couple days before I reinstall it.

Thanks Dan :D
While the seat has been out it gave me a good opportunity to deep clean the driver's side carpet. It didn't look very dirty but the rinse water let me know that it was time well spent :o

I started to put the drivers seat back in today and noticed that the backrest was exibiting the "lounge chair flop". I pulled the seat back out of the car and located the two gas struts that return the seatback to the upright position (one on each side). These were fairly easy to get to by removing the seat back cover. No disassembly of the hinges is required. I just popped the retaining clips off and slid the gas struts off their pegs at each end. One of the gas struts was essentially dead and the other was weak. I'll probably have to use some sort of compression on the new struts to install them. Figured I might as well handle this little problem before I put the seat back in.

The little gas struts are about 190mm long and 15mm diameter.
