My Garage Queen

Post by sansouci »

Finally I figured out pictures. This is several years old and the wrong mismatched real wheel has been corrected. This 1984 has gotten a new water pump, new master cylinder, new brake bomb. Still to go are new shocks, new struts, de-rust, new Bronzit paint job.
By the way, the background is a cornfield in Southampton NY

I definitely need to improve my photo skills based on some of the artistic stuff on this site.

Enjoy,
Ken

It's a dead stock automatic which was rebuilt about 10 years ago. Even has the original cassette player. I've got about 160,000 miles and haven't driven it in 3 years while in the garage. My other car is a 93 white 740il which I love. Wifey wanted something new so we got a 2011 Lexus E350. POS. Big mistake. The only good Japanese car was my 1971 240Z. If you think 6'rs rust, early Z-cars were the worst. That's when Ziebart did a big business before car mfgs knew something about zinc coatings, etc.

Next time I'll post some interior and engine pics.

Finally got it started and out of the garage.
The new master cylinder works properly
The NEW water pump leaked a bit on startup and then stopped????
Will probably remove the fan and re-torque the 10mm W/P bolts. I put a tiny bit of permatex on both sides of the new gasket when I assembled it, but will keep at it. Don't like leaking Loueys

Next job is new rear shocks, and other rubber parts as needed

Pictures to follow...

My replaced W/P did the same thing. A few drips and then it sealed.

Now where's the promised interior and engine pictures?

Wifey (the Navigator) has to show me how to download from my phone....Hopefully tomorrow I'll take better ones than the bad ones from today. In either case, you'll see them soon.

Today I tackled the water pump. It's in and I've also replaced cap & rotor, air filter. Tomorrow, ignition wires and test how good is the new pump. Next week - Oil change, new wipers. Then the state inspection. Thinking about a trans fluid change too. Got the filter......

PS I took some garage pics and interior shots of the 6'er. Will post it when I figure out how to minimize the size to accommodate the website.

Looks pretty nice!

Although with no spoilers, those US bumpers really stick out (literally and figuratively).

So I recently installed 1 new rear pitman arm. The other, mentioned in my post elsewhere broke off right at the boss on the swing arm. Drill bits from McMaster-Carr enabled me to drill a 1/4" hole. Squirted it with PB Blaster last week and will try to gently use an EZ-out to pull out the stub. Last thing I want to do is break the EZ out which them mean removing the swing arm, etc. etc. and taking it to a machine shop for removal and re-tapping. From a small job to a big job.

Other find under the hood-both low pressure hoses on the P/S are weeping. I would too if I was getting old (Hey, I am! 68 and still wrenching but getting onto a crawler is getting harder)

So I've got the new hoses and with luck this weekend: new hoses, new fluid, new P/S filter and new alternator bushings......

Does anyone know: below the top screen in the P/S reservoir, there is some kind of clip. How do I remove that?

One other question-I've seen somewhere there is a plastic or metal insert into the oil filter cannister that swirls the oil around the inside of the filter. Never saw one on any of my bimmers, so I don't know if it is OEM or what the P/N would be. Even if it came from a later model with a similar set up, I'd like to know...

Ken,
I replaced mine this past Friday. This link shows the correct procedure to install the clips, the clip, part 6, was a pain to get to lock in, had to push down hard on the basket and spring.

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... Id=32_0148

When filling the reservoir you must empty the brake bomb by placing the key in the 2nd position and pumping the brake peddle until hard, 10/20times. Fill the reservoir to 10mm from the top, (3/8"),
Also turn the steering wheel ten times left and right with engine running, to eliminate air in the system, recheck fluid level.
When done, and the brake bomb full, the fluid level in the reservoir will be below the screen. The reservoir top is not sealed, if over filled the ATF will leak out.

PS reservoir

Post by rhanley 635csi89 »

Ken, part #8 in the previous diagram goes right in place, no issue. It appears when part # 6 is locked into place that the top of the wire basket is 10MM from the top of the PS reservoir when the brake bomb is emptied. This may just be a coincidence.
The following diagram has directions for the PS refill and more. Roger

Well, My reman ATE M/C is leaking at the grub screw. Bought it from RockAuto and Cardone did the reman. No more. I'm going to spend the bucks (about $200) to find a new ATE m/c.
I HATE redoing jobs when there is so much new work to be done!

Re: My Garage Queen

After a long, winter slumber, I decided to address the leaking t-stat. I followed Song's advice rather than realoem, and resealed it with the gasket and not the O-ring. Oddly enough, the nearly new Behr-Thompson stat was neither perfectly round nor perfectly flat. I checked the flatness against the ground surface of the T-stat cover so had to work with a pair of pliers to get it flat. As to roundness, when I tried to put it into the housing's recess, it wouldn't sit evenly. Maybe the O-ring would have taken up any deviation. So I touched up the circumference with my bench grinder. But the best part was using Hylomar Blue ($14.95 on eBay) for the first time. The stickiness allowed the stat and the gasket to stay in place while I made up the bolts. Much better than permatex gasket sealer. So now I have a solid warmup to the middle of the dial and no leaks from that.
I'll post some pictures of the old O-ring and gasket post-mortem.
On to the other projects.....

Just refurbished the interior... Lots of gratifying and tedious work; well worth it. The 81,000 miles on it helped but, lots of sun damage. Off to the painter this month.

So I had the car out on the highway this weekend and at 70mph the engine stopped dead. Since I only use the car on weekends and disconnect the battery, that was my first thought. Good diagnosis. Tightened the positive clamp and we were back on the road. Lesson learned: recheck your work.

Regarding my new T-stat (Wahl) Was steady at 11am but then started jumping around and then resettled at 11am about 5 minutes later. I will have to monitor this a bit more..

I'll bet you have your battery on a float charger when you're not driving, right? Because even with the battery disconnected, the alternator should supply enough voltage to operate everything. You might need to check the alternator. I think the car is running on just the battery.
