635CSi 0-230km/h on the autobahn

Post by ///Moe »

Just wanted to see what the old lady could do on the Autobahn this summer :-)
https://youtu.be/-BdOsK7TDQE

Shot at a time where there was close to no cars on the road.
I got 245km/h out of it according to the speedometer, or approximately 235km/h on the GPS.
But it would max out at about 230km/h most of the time, depending on wind direction and so on.

It had just a little over 3500rpm in 200km/h in 4th gear and it had no problems maintaining that speed, so it's a serious machine for it's time!
Comfortable cruising speeds were 140-160km/h with 180km/h every now and then. Above 160km/h the fuel consumption increased dramatically.

Beautiful. The EH equipped cars aren't as slow as one would think. That is impressive with a 3.07 lsd to boot.

When going in a straight line it's not that bad, it's fast considering it's age. :-)

I took it to the Nürburgring as well, out on the track it felt a bit sluggish and too far down on the RPM's when I wanted to overtake.
It does about 150km/h in second gear and 240km/h in third, so naturally when you hit full throttle in 140-150km/h in third gear there's not much happening. Especially while cornering or going upphill, so it was more sightseeing than racing I would say..

I love both auto and manual transmission cars, but each for their own purposes.
I have other cars with manual so I don't mind the 635 being an auto, it's my summer cruiser.

Here's a shot doing 155 mph (shows about 153, but we made it \:D/ ) out in the Nevada desert

This was in a friend's ///M6, fresh rebuild and stroked to 3.7L =D>

Nice going Moe, slushbox or not \:D/

Very nice to get that pet of speed out of the old girl. The e24 chassis is pretty stable at speed. Had mine some time ago now up to 220kmh and was surprised how uneventful it was at that speed.

Golly gosh 3.07 with EH auto. I think it's 3.25. was complaining about my 3.25 with auto in e23. In traffic from a standing start to about 30kmh acceratiin is pretty leasurley but then goes hard. I recently installed a 3.73 diff and acceleration is much better but no 200kmh@ 3500. It would be Just over 4000 @ that speed.

I agree the autos are great cruisers. All other cars I have are manuals so it makes a nice change. The kickdown could be more aggressive in them as the auto is pretty reluctant to drop a ratio unless u are aggressive.

I have got hold of a chap with a South African m745i and he has agreed to get a copy of the auto trans computer which has more agreesive mapping. You may need to have a redline set as unchanges at full throttle are 6500 apparently.

Recently saw 5500rpm also in my manual 3.07 car. Was following a Mitsubishi Evo 10 and I think he got a surprise :D Amazing how stable and responsive these cars are considering mine is 30 years old !
