Video of my 635CSi at the Nürburgring this summer.

Post by ///Moe »

Just wanted to share a video from when I was at the Nürburgring this summer. 8)
One out of many childhood "dreams" that I have or had. :D

Here is the link to youtube:
https://youtu.be/81jy81_lXYM

For those who didn't know, I went on a little roadtrip with the sixer this summer.

I drove all the way from Northern Norway, through Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, Monaco, France, Luxembourg, through Germany and all the way back home. A trip of about 10 000km, which I did over the period of two weeks. I originally planned on spending three weeks, but with 30-38 degree celcius and no clouds most of the time combined with the aircondition that didn't work, I couldn't handle it anymore. I escaped back north, to above the arctic circle where I live. I did the trip alone and drove on the motorways most of the time, so after listening to the same music over and over again, eventually I got bored.

I didn't get to see all that much to be honest, I spent most of the time driving to get from A to B.
But I managed to fulfill a few dreams of mine, one of which was to drive a classic BMW from where I live all the way to the BMW Museum in München and back. I visited the BMW Museum, BMW Welt and the Olympia Park across the street of the museum. I got to see The Leaning Tower of Pisa and I visited the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. I got to drive at the Nürburgring in my own car and I drove across the bridge between Sweden and Denmark (I punctured a tyre crossing that bridge..) and I got to experience the unrestricted Autobahn (no speed limit!) first hand. The sixer topped out at 245km/h on the speedometer, or somewhere between 230-240km/h according to the GPS. I drove across the Stelvio Pass and the Mortirolo Pass in the alps of Northern Italy.

Would I do it again?
Yes, but probably not alone or in a car without working aircondition. And I would plan ahead way more than I did this time. 8-[
I probably would have jumped on a plane and rented a car, because about 2/3th of the trip was getting from where I live, to Germany and back.
But the "dream" of driving my own car all the way down there and back made the trip worth it. I'll remember this trip for the rest of my life. :-)

Sounds like a great trip Moe. I'm planning something similar across Australia one day, but you can bet my A/C will be working :D

Seems to me you were really moving with the car. Was it your first time on track?

It was my first time on that specific track, but I have driven on other tracks before.

Nice Vid. Appears that the auto was not overly suited to the NBR but looked fast. Shows you just how fast 8 mins is when your track lap (admittedly with queuing and stop/start) was 12mins.

I have no aircon. Took it out to lighten the beast. May put it back now.

A dream trip, would love to drive the NBR in anything really.

Yes, the auto made it a bit sluggish out there. :-#

It does about 150km/h in second gear and 230-240km/h in third, so there's not much happening when you floor it in third from about 130-140km/h.
I think the piston rings are a bit worn aswell, because it smokes if I use the gears for braking from above 4-5000rpm or corner really hard to the left (the engine is tilted about 30 degree to the right, so the oil will creep up the side of the engine-block towards the pistons then), which causes smoke and detonation that could be dangerous for the engine. Naturally, I wanted to keep that to a minimum so I tried not to use the gears for braking, causing the disc brakes to overheat a little.

12 minutes is a bit slow on this track, I think I could have gone much faster if I got a few more laps, manual transmission and emptied the boot.
I wish to og back there one day with my turbo MX5, it's faster on the straights and corner a lot better. The 635 is more of a cruiser and not setup for this kind of use.

The MX5 is lightweight (less than 1000kg), rear wheel drive, 50/50 weight distribution, have manual transmission and short gear ratio that makes it possible to keep between 5000-7000rpm at all time. I think I would be able to shave at least one or two minutes off one lap in that car. I don't think I'm able to reach 8 or 9 minutes without a lot of practice, thought.. Nürburgring is a difficult track to memorize because of it's length and similar surroundings. It have many blind corners and highspeed sections, making it difficult to judge when to step on the brakes. :-)

Sounds an orsome trip. Driving just for the sake of driving using the roads of the beautiful parts of the world. No problem going on your own as u go when and where you want and no consideration needed for others re hygiene.

Here's a video of my turbo Mazda MX5 / Miata as well:
https://youtu.be/0Jb7Zt1yekY

Video shows the first track weekend I attended with the new turbo setup and gear ratio.
Usually it's my daily driver, for whenever I don't want to use the BMW's. :-)

It also functions as my winter beater, so It's kind of an allround vehicle I'd say.
Most people think it's a pain in the a** to drive during the winter but I like it, it's kind of fun.
RWD with LSD, 50/50 weight distribution, manual transmission and the interior is so small it heat's up quickly.
