Italy road trip story

This time last year we were setting off from the UK to the Italian lakes in my M635CSi. We had a wonderful trip but it’s so sad to see how that area was devastated by COVID-19 and how many of us are now locked down.

I wrote the trip up and it was published in BMW Car magazine last year... on the anniversary of the start of this trip here is the story.

Enjoy and let’s look forward to similar trips shortly...

Absolutely fantastic to see people taking these cars on road trips like this! Looks like it was a great trip. 8)
Having done similar trips myself (through a total of 17 European countries) I can say it is great fun and the best way to go on holiday....although sometimes the wife does not agree. 8-[

PS Great pictures by the way; must have taken some effort to get all those!

Thanks for sharing, Motorhead!

I just did that trip with my family last July...and all i could think of is how much i wished i had one of my old cars with me in and around Lake Como instead of my rental Peugeot! My wife has family in the Reggio Emilia area and indeed the area has been hit very hard by Covid. Very sad. My kids pasted up a photo of Lake Como on our bedroom door to inspire us to get back as soon as is humanly possible.

I have read this before but just read it all again and loved it.
Magnificent read with wonderful photos ( many downloaded and stored ...) Thanks for sharing.
It' is something that I have thoughts on doing once we both retire .

What a joy and inspiration to read and big thumbs up to you sir, for using these cars the way they were intended. =D>

I daily drove mine for years but never managed to make epic trips like these.

Once it's back on the road after a 5 year hiatus, I do plan to honor my own promises and take it on some trips across Europe, once we're allowed to do so again.

Motorhead,

I am late chiming in on this on also.
What a fantastic trip and great article. Thanks for sharing.

I am likely straying off topic here; however, your mention of a Blaupunkt Berlin immediately caught my attention.
I still have an original Berlin system that I removed from one of my previous cars back in the 80s while "upgrading" to the newest CD system (I was relatively young and of questionable judgement).
Now that I am old and completely out of my mind, I am planning on installing it in one of my series one cars.
Any closeup photos of yours would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
cb

Craig, did you catch this thread, re-release of the Blaupunkt Bremen :-k

https://bigcoupe.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=31654

Looks very nice and period correct, but pricey, as duly noted :-({|=

Motorhead, great article and photos, great to have you back =D>

We actually met at Legends of the Autobahn a few years ago, you were seeking me out to donate a front end bra that you purchased for your M635, but was intended for US bumpers and did not fit, of course #-o

Still have it in fact \:D/

Once again, welcome back 8)

Hi Bob,
I did see the re released the Bremem. Nice unit, but I am attached to my old Berlin and would really like to put it back in use once again. It is a conversation starter and correct to the period. I am hoping to see a photo or two of motorhead's Berlin in a sixer.
I am afraid my installation may become one of those projects for a later day...

No problem, I’ll take some pictures of the Berlin and the two goosenecks.

What a great story =D> Thanks for sharing!

Would you please share the exact map of the ride? 8)

I am planning a similar road trip, but lost in tons of POIs and locations to see. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for sharing this great story, the Italian Lake District is wonderful, the M too. Love the break down guarantee, luckily my wife was not with when I had to leave an e24 behind in a German workshop returning from a road trip from Spain to Norway. Picked it up a few weeks later, and returned ok, generally they are very solid cars
