BUYING AN LS1 ENGINE FOR MY E24

Post by SechsEckeS?chtigen »

Hi guys, ive been wanting to do an ls swap in an e24 since i bought the car two years ago, i've found one on ebay, 2600 shipped for the engine 56k miles sat for 5 years http://www.ebay.com/itm/1998-GM-LS1-Cam ... es&vxp=mtr

Ive been searching around and theres a member of this forum ed i believe almost done with a m6 swap, havent found his build thread though. Is this a pretty straight forward swap? i don't want to cut anything (firewall) and am open to fabicating headers, engine mounts ect. or if there are engine mounts out there that would be awesome. I've been searching always do before i ask but if you guys have any information that would be wonderful, oh and if you have any transmission suggestions throw them out there, i was thinking a good t56 or equivalent german tranny getrag or something. Want something reliable. sorry for the quick post thanks guys,

Carl

Given the similarities in the chassis, you might want to get in touch with the guy over in MyE28.com who has one in his E28. He just drove it to and from TedFest in Toronto (so you might search those threads).

It depends on who you talk to. If you're going to do it, just find the other guy who's already done it and correspond with him. Most of us have no experience with it. There's also been a BMW V-8 put into an E28.

Try to find "John" who goes by Prarieman. If not here or on bimmerforums you can probably find him on Roadfly. He posts occasionally. He has done the swap.

This is sweet , I am all about this transplant. I have been doing some RECON at the Bone Yards for a decent Chevy V8 and trans. I guess you have to use the Chevy ECU or go with a stand alone set up. I still want to hook the Turbo up on my M90 first.

ls1 motors

Post by bsccp »

Unless you are absolutely set on a ls1,6 or 7 it is a far cheaper route to use a truck motor. It is the same series as the Camaro motors with iron blocks and aluminum heads (LM7). Makes about 300 hp stock and is dirt cheap. Front end stuff is all interchangable as is the intake, all it takes is money:)

You can buy a 5.3, complete with wiring and ECU and accessories for way less than $2600! Like $1000. 6.0 is a little more but I bet there is a local yard where you could find a low mile pull out or an entire vehicle?

I know this is heresy and way off subject but I am currently building a '51 GMC 5 window with an S-10 frame and a 6.0/4L80e

I'll stick with my M30 and 5 speed, it's still a lot of fun:)

Cool project Carl, hope you see it through. I'm putting an ls1 in a c3 corvette at present. These are great motors, rev quickly and lots of potential for mods. I'll probably never go back to iron sbc's. ...as long as your e24 isn't an M6 or a euro 635!

A V8 with cast iron block will probably be heavier than a stock M30. My guess is the all aluminum LS1 might be lighter than an M30.

Money no object, I would favor the LS1.

Not sure the L98 is really worth the effort. I did help a buddy do this back in the late 80's but options were just not as many and he insisted on doing TPI due to cost at that point to build the BMW with custom pistons and parts. The L98 is heavy compared to the M30 unless you have an 86 or newer vette version with alum heads (still heavier). Also the L98 is rated at 225-245 hp depending on year and configuration ( May be off slightly as I know BMWs and BBC better than SBC). LS maybe but L98? Why not an M5* or S5*?

The L98 was FREE I can change the comp ratio and ad a better lift cam,and do some head work for more HP . These are all cheap mods to a small block Chevy motor.

SBC mods can be cheap but shaving weight is not. Still might be cheaper to sell the free motor and take the funds that you were going to spend on the upgrade; compile them and buy a LS motor. You will have better weight distribution and still have the Chevy power you want.

I don't know when Iam going to do this , may be this summer. I have to find the source that sells the Motor mounts and transmission adaptor. Then I will rip into the motor to Balance the parts and add High compression pistons and a bigger cam. ECT ECT ECT…. I also will add a set of GM Vortec heads to add more HP

Hey, maybe with a little more time you could parlay the iron motor into an LS1?
You could trade into a cheap 00 camaro or something? Maybe even find one with a 6spd! [-o<

Why do you hate Camaro's? Did one run over you and bite you in the booty??
I use to have a '67 that was pretty reliable & balanced nicely.
