FS: 87 M6 $20,000

Post by MSGGrunt »

The time has come to pass along my E24 M6 to a new caretaker. This M6 was originally sold in California and was a California car for 26 years until the previous owner bought it and eventually moved to Texas with it in 2013. The car remained in Texas until I purchased it in 2015 and had it shipped to Massachusetts. The Texas owner spent a significant amount of time and money looking after this special car and I have continued to do the same. The car drives, accelerates, brakes, and steers as tight as you could want. I have kept meticulous records and have a binder with over $18,000 in receipts for parts and maintenance for this amazing car. I have a clean Massachusetts title in hand.

Work done on the car by previous owner and myself:
- Jim Blanton rebuilt original G280 transmission at a cost of $3000.00. These transmissions can no longer be rebuilt. The parts just aren't available any longer.
- Complete new clutch
- New flywheel
- New fuel injection trumpet rubber boots
- New fuel pumps
- New crank sensor
- Upgraded cam timing chain tension-er
- Original "yellow" throttle body plugs still in place.
- Upgraded A/C system with a Sanden compressor and R34 coolant
- All new A/C hoses
- New Radiator
- Newer fan clutch
- New radiator overflow tank
- New fan shroud
- All new radiator and heater hoses
- New heater mono valve
- All new brakes
- New hood vent grills
- Rebuilt master cylinder
- New brake bomb
- New SLS accumulators as of July 2017
- Rebuilt steering system
- New relays
- New correct battery in May 17
- OEM Forged Euro M5 "Throwing Star" wheels. A pretty special and rare wheel.
- Brand new Sumitomo tires ordered end of July 2017. Less than 100 miles at time of listing.
- New BMW door seals
- New BMW trunk seal
- Restored interior using Leatherique products. No small project given the amount of leather in the M cars.
- Euro headrests which really changes the look of the car
- Refinished 635 dash
- Autopal Hella style headlights with replaceable bulbs
- Correct Euro M blue cased warning triangle. Very hard to find.
- Period correct brand new mint condition first aid kit
- Complete tool kit including the antenna wipes. (needs BMW blue cloth and the screw drivers are green handled not red)
- Owner's manuals
- Original factory BMW sales brochure
- Period cassette cleaning kit
- New under hood insulation
- New decals for the hood and engine compartment.
- 1980's Road & Track highlighting the M car
- ALL body panels have their original VIN tags/decals
- The trunk area is spotless
- The battery box is spotless
- Still has the original TRX spare on the original wheel.

Simply put this car has been adult owned and kept completely stock minus the upgraded AC system and the throwing star rims. The radio is stock, the SLS that most people eliminate when it starts to act up is stock, only BMW parts have been used when things have needed replacement, the interior is in great condition since its restoration. The car in my ownership has never seen rain or snow. It gets tucked away in my garage at the first sign of bad weather. The paint is bright and shiny and gets compliments at my local BMW CCA events.

The total miles on the car I calculate to be 134,409. My paperwork/documentation shows the car was at 116,914 in 2008 and then in 2010 4,858 when the odometer was replaced. I aquired the car in June of 2015 with 18,502 on the odometer. The odomerer currently reads 22,353.

What are her flaws? The front lower air dam will need refinishing, the dash is no longer leather covered. It is a dash out of a 635 that has been colored to match the two tone dark brown leather of the door tops. There is a small paint bubble the size of a quarter under the passenger's side rear taillight and an area where the paint is bubbling on the passenger's side wheel arch. Other than these two areas the underside of the car is spotless. It shows that it has never seen bad weather.

I welcome and highly encourage any potential buyers to come and look at the car. I also encourage a PPI at your discretion. I would be willing to drive the car to a garage of your choice within a reasonable distance from Western, MA. I will also assist with any shipping you may need but, all the arrangements and details will be the buyer's responsibility.

I will respond to any additional questions and send any pictures or videos if requested. If you prefer discussing the car on the phone I would be very happy to do so. I can be reached at 774-239-4767.

The car will be sold with a clean/clear Massachusetts title that I have in hand as well as a bill of sale.

I feel the car is very solid at or close to my asking price. I hate to sell it but, I just bought a Porsche Cayman and have a 325iX project so, I need to make room in the garage. The car has been fun but, not being independently wealthy I have decided to sell the beloved M6 to fund my iX project and maybe some fun bits for the Porsche.

I've dropped the price to $20,000 in hopes of a quick sale. The car is worth more than this but, Winter is coming to New England and I need the space in the garage.

Beautiful car for a very correct price! Good luck with the sale!

It seems to have the M88/3 engine instead of the expected S38B35 in US M6 models ? (judging by the valve cover and the idle adjustment screw on the intake)
The M88/3 was all about power, no cats. At idle the raw fuel from the exhaust will make your eyes water like an old V-8 powered muscle car's exhaust did.

Yes, it likely has a swapped in Euro M88/3. This was done prior to the owner I bought if off, a Bimmerfoums.com member and enthusiast, and was something I was ok with. The internals of the head are perfect with a nice bronze "patina" and zero evidence of any abnormal wear on the cam lobes.

Of course I am a bit biased but, I truly feel this is a solid example of the M6. I gave this car a lot of love and care and would like to see it go to an enthusiast who will do the same.

Several local big BMW guys who are into the higher end cars and have seen the car thought that the car was underpriced when I was talking about selling it at $25,000. Sure maybe EVENTUALLY I could get that price but, at $20,000 I am hoping to find an appreciative buyer that knows the cars true value. I have already had two potential buyers back out when they discovered their bank would not give them a car loan on a 30 year old car.

I am amazed that I am having a hard time selling this car, unless I want to let it go for $15,000...

I am in the process of replacing the SLS with regular coils and Bilstein HD shocks and will have the front air dam and small rust spots fixed then I'll try my luck on Bring a Trailer.

The body guy I will be using isn't fast but, he is reasonable and for the most part specializes in bringing back to life older muscle cars that others may not want to invest time and money into.
