You want 533i/633/M5 flywheel it seems. The lightweight one wasn't used on M30B34 or B35.

Have you located one? Best to state application so that you get what you need.

Tom is correct with his points but it is applicable to both B34 and B35 use. Unfortunately not enough information out there about how well it works vs the later dual mass FW.

As I have not done it before, I don’t know if there’s anything different about proper setup of the clutch.

I will have two resurfaced lightweight FWs available shortly. One with reference pin, one without.

The B35 can use either FW, the B34 has to have the reference pin.

Thanks guys,

The flywheel is for an M88 engine.

Real OEM says that the same flywheel was used on the 635, 633, 735 engines.

Looked all over and could not find a part number on any of these. I do have both types - with or without the reference pin as shown at the 12 O’Clock position

Your need is determined by the engine management you will be using for the motor. If stock BMW, then you need the unit with a reference pin.

PM if interested. Thanks

Hi guys,

Many thanks Ralph,Tschultz and Brickwhite for you replies.

Apologies Ralph that I am only getting back to you now, I have been a little distracted trying to get this problem solved. I had a non running car with some very hard to diagnose symptoms which lead us to a problem with the flywheel as the crank shaft sensors were not picking up a signal from the flywheel.

After a lot of head scratching it turns out the flywheel was not at fault. I wont go into details to save my embarrassment but it was a very easy fix that I should have spotted

Thanks guys though for all of your replies and offers of help.

Regards,

Nick

Nick,

Glad you've fixed your problem, but to help us all in the future could you say what the issue was and what the resolution was. This forum is pretty unique in that its members offer up their solutions, however simple and basic, so that others can learn from the experience.

You are determined for me to embarrass myself on a public forum.

Well OK here goes.

The problem was a non starting M635. The engine was turning but no spark or fuel. We checked the fuses and replaced relays and all looked good. This then led us to change the ECU and crank shaft sensors. Luckily I was able to remove these items from my E28 M5. The M635 ECU and CS sensors were fitted to the M5 and worked correctly.

We then rigged up a makeshift loom between the E28 M5 and the M635 to trick the M635's ECU into thinking that the E28 M5's crank shaft sensors were its own ( if that makes any sense ). The M635 started to deliver fuel and spark as the M635 ECU recognised that the M5 flywheel was turning using the M5's crankshaft sensors and flywheel.

We then determined by a process of elimination that the M635 flywheel must be at fault, even though we could see that the TDC peg was still attached to the flywheel.

The gearbox was dropped out of the car and the flywheel inspected, with no obvious damage found. The flywheel was cleaned up and and the car was bolted back together but still would not start. At this point we had run out of options and I was starting to get a little worried. Why would it not start!!

I decided to look for a new flywheel just in case...hence the wanted ad on Bigcoupe.

I decided that the problem needed a fresh set of eyes as my trusted and very knowledgeable mechanic and I were going around in circles.

I had the car sent on a flatbed to another well regarded BMW mechanic here in Ireland. I told him nothing about our endevours to fix the car. All I said was "the car won't start, can you please fix it". About 30 mins after the car arrived at his premises I got a text to say that the car was running. I immediately phoned him. "How did you get the car running?" "It was just a simple fuse" he said, "which fuse?" "I don't know, I just replaced the one that was blown and the car started".

So....you can see my embarrassment, myself and my mechanic put in about about 20 hours trying to sort the problem, we even got a guy with an oscilloscope to measure the pulses from the M635 crankshaft sensors and compare them to the readings from the E28 M5. The readings were good and even HE could not understand why the car wouldn't start!!

All for a little 20 cent fuse!!! In our own defence I definitely remember checking the fuses but must have missed the blown one.

Lesson learnt...always double check the simple stuff.

I appreciate the update Nick but I'm still puzzled as to which fuse was bad. I'm asking for specifics as simply saying a fuse was replaced leaves it very vague. Fuse for the OBC maybe?

BTW, your request for this flywheel opened up my eyes to their current selling value. I used to sell them for $120-150 a few years ago. Thanks for the good news.

It puzzeled me also Ralph.

Mechanic no.2 still has the car. He is doing a few other jobs. I am picking up the car in a few days so I will investigate further and see if he can pinpoint which fuse he replaced.

Yeah, when I went looking I was surprised how expensive flywheels were and how hard they were to get.

Nick,

There's no shame or embarrassment - a lot of us have been foxed by worse, or perhaps simpler, E24 maladies but now we can all add 'check all the bloody fuses' to a future non-starting M635 scenario.

I will.

Thanks again.

Yes....

When I collected the car off mechanic no.2, I asked him to point out the fuse which he replaced. He was fairly sure it was fuse no 11. I checked the owners manual and this is the fuse for the fuel pump.

Now...the car was not delivering fuel or spark. I can understand why there was no fuel but why was there no spark? Does the ECU automatically stop ignition if no fuel is detected??

I would be grateful if anyone who understands M635 electrics better than me could explain that one.

Thanks
