thump/pop sound when steering

Post by Danny Wilde »

Hi all! :D
Today for the first time while pulling out of a parking place I got a "thump" sound from the front end while steering right, no sounds whatsoever while cruising and making slight turns, once I got home I tried steering right and left while stationary and the occasional "thump" happened only while steering right…

As suggested in other posts I've read I checked (with a cold engine) the steering/brake fluid level and it's ok.
I should also point out that one year from now I have completely rebuild all the perishable parts of both front and rear axles and driveshaft, and the 6 has been cruising as smooth as velvet since then 8)

Any guesses on which could be the probable culprit?

Thanks as always for you kind help :D
cheers

some things to check

- strut top bearings/mounts
- control arm mountings/bolts
- spring seats
- ARB mountings
- steering box mountings (these are notorious for cracking)
- idler arm condition/mountings

if the sound resonates it is likely to be something in or near a spring

cheers

thanks Brucey! :D Just went to my mech this morning and had a look underneath, and yes, the bracket of the steering box had unwelded itself from the beam below, will get it re-welded and report the results.
Thanks again!

It could be anything from the sway bar end links to loose tie rods to the actual steering box itself. Gotta get under there and look for what's loose. If nothing is loose, liek in my case, it turned out to be the steering box which had the adjustment screw too tight. I had to replace the steering box :x

GRNSHRK and tschultz thanks for your advice :D , finally managed to get the bracket welded and all is ok again! That bracket reinforcement idea looks really good, definitely will do it if it happens again, unfortunately didn't have enough time to get it built this time round..
Thanks again guys,
another happy ending =D> \:D/

Just my 2 cents. DON'T WAIT to do the steering repair that Ed sells! It is an easy fix and if nothing else, gives you a good piece of mind feeling. I did mine about a month ago ( it wasn't broken, but I tend to drive it a little " aggressively". It is a worthwhile addition that should be done even if your car doesn't need it yet. Remember, we are dealing with almost 30 plus year old cars. :D

thanks for you advice 87shark, as a matter of fact I have a very "cautious" driving stile 8-[ so I guess I'll stick with the "normal" bracket for the moment, but will definitely consider ordering one when the next order to Ed will be done!
Btw really appreciate your advice.. :-)

Hi guys, here I am again , after re-welding the bracket the thump sound while steering has been successfully healed. However another issue has arisen which had actually started while the thumping sound had initially showed up but I didn't heed it too much since I was focusing on the thump noise…

After making a full steer to the left or to the right the car stays slightly steered in either direction :-k, then it evens up after slighter steering (in either direction) while going straight..

As stated above one year from now I have completely rebuilt both front and rear axles and driveshaft, maybe there's still some part that needs replacing?

Thanks again for your invaluable help,
Danny
