M653CSI / M6 BBS Split Rim Info / pictures?

Post by Boggie »

Hi All,

I have recently acquired a set of BBS RC009 and RC010 wheels for my M635CSI restoration. They are very close to the OEM wheel style and whilst the wheels are in fairly good condition, and certainly good enough for the interim, I will be reconditioning them at some point for when I finish the car.

I have been tossing around some ideas such as polishing OR painting the rims hyper silver, then painting the centres to match the car's diamond black metallic bodywork and bolting the centres back to the rims with black BBS bolts... Now whilst this might look great, it conflicts with my preference to keeping the car looking as original as possible. To help me decide, have any of you a picture of the original M635SCI / M6 BBS split rime please? I have tried Googling but get mixed results and finding it hard to differentiate between real OEM and after-market.

Thanks,
Ian

in which case (playing devil's advocate here) does it really matter?

BTW a lot of folk with a black car would go with gold centres in BBS split rims, giving a nod to the JPS race cars. You can go for a muted gold shade if you want to keep it subtle. This looks good (IMHO) if the interior has tan leather in it, whereas black centres might look better with a black interior...? The rims lips themselves would be best polished and clear-coated, wouldn't they?

This is (I think) a stock M635CSi

note that the original bolt-up M635CSi rims were not supplied in all markets, or were only supplied for a short length of time.

These are the 3 piece metric wheels originally supplied with the M635.

They were all withdrawn and scrapped (some escaped), as BMW couldn't get them to seal properly!

They re-issued the one piece metric wheel as a replacement.

I managed to get a set of 5 in pieces from various sources and totally re-furbed them. They are now owned by "soperman". He

has some pics of the wheels on his car. Send him a PM.

The dark blue M635CSi at BMW's museum in Munich also sports the original split rim 3 piece metric wheels, correctly known as BBS RS 007s. The key differentiator back in 1985 between these and other 16" BBS RS (other than the size) was the use of black bolts.

Specialist dealers/mechanics Classic Heroes are rather partial to re-finishing RCs with black bolts as a homage to the original rims.

Ron is quite correct that there aren't many 007s left around now. I know of only two other sets here in the UK, and one of those are fitted to a regular 635.

Thanks Chaps!

Exactly what I needed. So polished rims and black bolts for my RC009/RC010 wheels will look pretty much spot on (albeit a little more dish and lower profile tyres). I was torn over the gold centres but as my car has a red interior I am leaning to keeping the centres silver.

Next.question

Can anyone recommend a UK supplier of reasonably priced M7x30 high-tensile steel, black flanged and splined bolts with flanged 12point nuts please?

I can find 'BBS Rebuild' kits on eBay and Amazon but Don't trust their quality....

Thanks,
Ian

I've always got mine from Germany as I was unable to find the correct bolts in the UK.

BBS will not supply to the public and they say that the bolts are a "one-time" use only!

You want these in black:-

Nuts:-

Most of the ones on ebay are standard stainless hex. bolts.

Thanks Ron,

That is the correct type but unless I am missing something, they don't do black.
I found THESE BOLTS which are the correct style, color and material. Add in THESE NUTS and that's the lot at £153 all in. :)

Anyone used this supplier?

Additionally, THESE GUYS are local to me. I could get them to powder coat the centre cap large nut and wheel rims 'Chrome Silver', the spokes 'Black Chrome' and assemble them with new gloss black bolts.....

I think they would look amazing finished that way so worth getting a price. From their site it ooks like £360 plus the new bolts so around £500 all in. Now I could strip, polish, lacquer the rims, respray the centres and spokes then rebuild with new black BBS bolts/nuts myself for less than half the price but this will take all weekend. On top of that powder coating is much tougher than lacquer on a polished rim, the latter being prone to failure and milkiness with the slightest chip. I have seen chrome silver powder coating on a bike frame and it is pretty close in appearance to polished alloy.

However good they might look, this goes against the grain a little for me. What do you guys think?

Would this be a step too far from the original? Is is it a bit too 'bling' for an 80's classic, even once I have given the car a shiny new coat of Diamond Black paint? Opinions gratefully received...

Boggie, not to highjack this thread, but, Soperman, I've got the same photo of the M635 at the Welt

I like this other one as well, thought I framed the BMW M power rather nicely #-o

Maybe I should have kept mine rather than splitting them up and making a set of 18” rims out of them. I’ll still keep the barrels if I ever in the future wish to convert them back

Can anyone clarify this for me:

When the M635 was launched with the RS007s, did it have painted, or polished rims?

Not sure how to proceed with the RC009/010 refurb.

Rob - The RS007s had a machined finish (albeit a pretty damned refelctive one) rather than a full mirror polished finish to the rims.
They were not painted.
