Trying to get hold of Front ABS sensor

Post by bludhemn »

HI everyone

I am based in New Zealand and managed to acquire 1984 635 CSi, which was imported from UK. I am not the 1st owner and have been trying to get the car road worthy (WOF/MOT) for a few months now. What is finally left is the front left ABS sensor, which is entirely missing from the car. I've been shuttling back and forth from BMW NZ and dealers in UK, but have been largely unsuccessful. I came across this useful thread, which mentions that the E23 front ABS sensor should work fine for the E24:

viewtopic.php?f=17&t=26149

Can someone please confirm if the E23 sensor will fit the E24?

From RealOEM, this is the part number for the E23:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... 1121365275

Also, this is what we found out from BMW NZ, which I doubt the authenticity:

OEM 34 52 1 155 037 — BMW
OEM 34 52 1 178 981 — BMW

An eBay UK seller has the above part 0 265 001 058 (34 52 1 178 981), but the seller isnt sure if it'll fit E24. This is what he had to say:

The connections between the catalogues are not 'solid' but nevertheless i see a connection between:
the original bmw number for the pulse sensor (or speed sensor) 34521179981 and i can make a connection to 0265001038 albeit not directly.

i can say the abs sensor fits the front of the car, but are not handed left/right i.e. as there is no seperate part numbers for left and right.

The mechanic who is working on my car has confirmed that the existing front right sensor is part number 0 265 001 038.

After going through that entire thread, it appears that both front left and right are no longer available anywhere, but the rear ones are still available.

I've spent quite a bit now on this car and am really struggling with this last bit which is quite frustrating. Would greatly appreciate if anyone could throw some light.

Thanks very much.

Hi,

I found a site in the Netherlands which suggests that the sensors for e23, e24 and e28 are the same https://www.e28.nl/product/e23-e24-e28- ... r-front-2/. Of course this doesn't show up on most websites selling them. Then I found a reference to a more generic Bosch part number 0 265 001 038 which seems to be available from some suppliers. And then - bingo - another post on bigcoupe in the google results - maybe should have looked on here first LoL.

Anyway this thread: viewtopic.php?t=26149 seems to answer your questions. Page 4 actually explains the difference between the e23, e24 and e28 oem sensors and how to use the e23 type. Hope this helps, I replaced mine many, many years ago when they were still available.

Cheers,
Martyn

Martyn,

Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.

I had gone through that post in detail :)

For now, I've ordered this part from eBay UK:
Genuine Bosch 0265001058 ABS Speed Sensor Front/Left 34521155037 34521178981 WS1

I will post an update on this thread after we get it.

Thanks again.

Yes, the Pulse generator for the e23 will fit. About 14 inches longer then you need. I installed one last month and it works.

The sensor I ordered from eBay was alright, although the mechanic had to make some minor alterations to mount it. Once again, the part number is 0 265 001 058 and cost me 180 NZD including shipping to NZ (around 122USD/93GBP).

There are a few more available on eBay, so might be a good time to stock up some :)

Thank you very much for your help!
