Whoa, you went all out on that!
I went through several versions before I had one that actually worked well. I didn't do all the modifications like you. I just kept swapping parts! Hopefully this is something you'll never have to mess with again.

And BTW, I ain't that young, just determined! LOL.

Does anyone have a purchase list to refresh the washer system, particularly the length of the tubing and the number of Oetiker clamps. My chariot is a 1984 633Csi (US version) with NO headlight washing system. Realoem only shows the item # but no quantity.

Ken,

What ever happened to your A/C plans? Did you find an aluminum evaporator (if so, from where) or end up reusing the e24 copper one?

Thanks,

Eric,
I bought a cross-flow condenser and my next task is going to remove/rebuild the compressor. Weather just got nice enough to work outdoors on my back. I'm not planning to remove the evaporator unless when all is buttoned up and recharged, I'm left with no other choice. I guess I should also look for an aluminum evaporator for my "Plan B"
Thanks for keeping tabs on my sloooow progress.

No worries, my middle name is "slow progress". If you saw my Projects thread, I have let my poor car sit for something like 2 years. Like you, I am back on it and the A/C is one thing I will be tackling as well so I am looking for as much helpful info as I can get.

Keep working on it and enjoy the journey,

I completely rebuilt my A/C system and it works a charm. This weekend it was showing 100 degrees in San Jose, California as I drove 140 miles round trip to pick up a new wheel. That's another story. Bottom line is that my A/C blew cold and kept the inside of the car comfortable the whole trip.

Look in my project thread to see all the gory details of my A/C rebuild. Let me know if you have any questions.

Song,
I admire your energy and "get 'er done" commitment. You mentioned in a recent post you've just celebrated your 25th. Big congrats. My honey and I are going on 31yrs. Only my 6'er is older.
I followed your A/C refresh but i have to solve a rear suspension problem first (new diff mount and replace a swing arm- thanks Ralph for sourcing that one!)

Got some motivation (not a lot to be sure) but the broken stud on the pitman arm has been bugging me. Tried drilling with a screw extractor, but so far, no-go. Next up will be heat, maybe with a MAPP torch.
So that aside, I thought I'd refresh (my wife asked what that meant...."Changing stuff that ain't broke") my rear sway bar links and bushings along with replacing the 2011 fuel filter. This is in anticipation of new shocks and struts later on.
With the new links in hand, I realized I needed some advice as the new ends are not shrunken and shriveled like the old ones. Tried silicon spray and used a socket that would urge the rubber bushing over the sway bar. NADA. Should I be using grease? Boiling water? Deadblow hammer? Is there a special tool? I'm a sucker for special purpose tools in any case.

The two pics of the OEM vs Lemfoerder links shows that the Lems are truly BMW OEM as on the side where the BMW logo/name was machined off.

Those of you who have a lift at your house are truly blessed. The time and aggravation savings are priceless. But I digress.

Below is the offending broken bolt. All manner of lubricants including PB were tried. I may have to go to the ultimate solution. Ralph sold me a swing arm but that is a last resort.

Any idea of the length of fuel hose I'm going to need for the pump to filter to main hard line replacement? Tomorrow I will get under it with a tape to confirm but I think I can get away with 1m. HF has this neat set of 4 hose shut off clamps So I will let you know if it is a hit or miss.
I'm in the process of ordering new Cocomats and the pattern they sent needs some modification to the front (to cover the left foot rest) and the rear (to go under the front seat by about 2 inches.) They are very responsive on the phone but for $250+ shipping, you should expect that. With my Bronzit Beige exterior and beige interior, I'm going with brown and natural inlays (color code #06).
Till next time..

Hey, I used those HF hose clamps and they worked very well. Funny thing is that I forgot where I put them after the first use and next time I needed clamps, I just used the ones I have lying around for woodwork. They worked too.

Do you do that? Buy tools for one project and then forget where you put them. I have lots of duplicate tools because of that. Lol.

Also I changed my links at some point but I don't recall having to use special tools. It was just a pain in the butt to force them on.

Finally, those bottlecap wheels don't look half bad in your picture. I have my original set that are just lying around since I got new wheels. I may have to get tires on my bottlecap wheels and try them out.

Song, Sometimes it is just easier to buy rather than look for missing/misplaced tools. Now the guys who make YouTube toolbox videos are really sick. I am nowhere near that degree of O/C. Regarding the links, I'll just have to use brute force

I am convinced we have 99% rat brains and 1% human brains. So after struggling to get the sway bar links, in situ, it dawns on me to swivel the links around and snake that entire sucker out the side so that I beat on it to remove the links. Success! The other 1/3 of the job is to get the new links onto the sway bar. Some axle grease and a large impact socket (so that I'm not striking the rubber) and it's assembled. A little gloss black to dress it up and I just need to wait until the paint dries and I shall re-assemble it (that's the last third) . I thought I might need to replace the rubber bushes, but they are nice and firm and not cracked so the new ones go into the spare parts box. My next challenge will be the diff mount. On several threads, there is a discussion about which ones. I ordered P/N 3317 1 129 786 (Mayle/Thailand) from Autohauz AZ but it doesn't look like what is on the car. On the car, it looks taller and has two triangular shaped ears, 1 on each side to dampen the shocks as the car goes up and down. I know they are BMW as the paper tag remnant say Original BMW part, Made in Germany. I hope the picture what able to get the P/N from the paper tag.

I'll post some pics later tonight

Song,
I think the tool problem is not enough storage where things can be logically laid out and visible.

The interior needed some work so I've started a Leatherique treatment to my Pearl Beige seats. I guess most of the crud that comes off with the rejuvenator is actually oxidized dye rather than sweat or soiling. As to the steering wheel, after the Leatherique, what is the best stuff to redo the black leather? Liquid shoe dye?

I am also working with Chrissy at cocomats.com to custom make a pattern for the car which would cover the footrest.

On the broken stud in the pitman arm mount, I'm going to try a left hand tap and left hand threaded bolt to try to unscrew the remnant as I think a bolt would be better than a brittle "easy-out." McMaster-Carr has them in stock and I'll let you know how that works. There are two sites that have left-handed bolts in both metric and SAE.

Re: My 6'er- Cocomats

Post by sansouci »

I just received my Cocomats. They are great people to work with. I started with their existing 635 template, but after a few revisions, it fits like a glove. I used the Coco color 06 which is a beige dot on a brown background. The heavy rubber backing should settle in over the summer as the car warms up. I chose to cover the dead pedal and made the rears a little longer to fit under the seat. If you want to use my template, ask Chrissy at Cocomats for my 84 633CSI. They store them digitally which is an awesome advance on the sewing technology.

I have an old driver's side and two rears for anyone who wants to pay the postage. They are a greenish color and the black foam backing is falling apart. But they were OEM and they were real carpeting.

Oh, the car is bronzit and the interior is beige.

More pics
My phone doesn't do the color justice. It is a chocolate brown. They are happy to send color samples (I think they get $1 each)

I also have a template for a trunk mat, but until I empty that in the summer, It will wait. I may use a different material back there with a solid color.

Re: My 6'er Muffler Question

Post by sansouci »

I need to replace the rear section of my muffler as the mid pipe to rear muffler joint is rusted through as is the rear muffler. I found an ANSA model BW2545 mid section which applies to the 1982 633CSI. I'm not certain of a match to my '84. Is this applicable to an E12 and NOT my E24?
I'm not looking for a sporty/noisy VROOM.
Any advice is appreciated.

Re: My 6'er Diff Mount Part Number

Post by sansouci »

I'm working on the rear end and had bought a Meyle Diff Mount from Autohauz AZ. They supplied P/N 33 17 1 129 786. But it is too short and seems to fit the 635 per Realoem and not my 1984 633csi (VIN 6997510.) It is only about 50mm in height while the existing mount is about 80mm. I know my mount had been replaced many years ago but couldn't find the P/N of that item.
Realoem is not helpful. I sure wish they showed P/Ns of NLA items.

So if anyone can supply the right P/N. Otherwise a too short diff mount will result in the half shafts operating at a sharper angle.

Re: My 6'er Diff Mount

Post by sansouci »

Okay. So I found the P/N on my existing Diff Mount: 33 17 1 125 290 and using realoem it applies to the Euro versions of the 628 and 635 only. It is about 40mm higher than the specified Diff Mount for my USA 633CSI. I think my indy shop many years ago used this instead as it gives the suspension more clearance. There is a phenomenal price difference: $269.92 vs about $40 at FCP Euro for the 633's mount. I've never thought about lowering the ride height and I've got the 14" tires. So I may bite the bullet and replace it with the Euro item. This will be part of a strut & shock refresh as the car has about 125,000 miles and about 60k on the existing struts & shocks.
Does anyone know the spec for the ride height and the measuring points to figure it out??

Thanks in advance.

I went through a similar issue, recall getting a different mount and then found a number of posts here and on MyE28, discussing the different options etc. I suspect there are more than a few similarly deteriorated mounts driving around out there.

No help though on the correct ride height settings though have seen these on here somewhere.

Hey, we have the same car and I may have to attack this same problem soon. If you'll recall in an earlier post, my exhaust fell apart, but enough of it was there for me to have the service guy weld it back together - minus a few internal baffles. I had come across the Walker Exhaust version in my search that seems to be a reasonably priced replacement. Here's the part on thew Autozone site for $208. https://www.autozone.com/emission-contr ... 95487_1995

It says it's for a 1985 635, but even if not an exact fit, a muffler guy could make it work for maybe $100 more I think.
I think I have come across a few posts of folks who have used this part for an earlier model.

I found the thread titled "The Definitive Ride Height Thread" posted by ZROSSA on July 6, 20009 and Chris Wright dated May 20, 2008. They post the front and rear factory ride height tables with guidance on adjusting the numbers if you have aftermarket or non-standard wheels.

I found an ANSA model BW2545 mid section which applies to the 1982 633CSI. I'm not certain of a match to my '84. Is this applicable to an E12 and NOT my E24?
I'm not looking for a sporty/noisy VROOM.
Any advice is appreciated.

Hey Song -- Thanks!
Did your guy use the entire muffler or just the rear section? My mid pipe seems to be OK and I'm thinking my rusted joint at the mid-pipe to rear muffler was from insufficient use to heat the condensate from the exhaust. Mine is not a DD so it only gets occasional use. What's next on your to--do list?

Re: My 6'er: Battery Vents -- Who Knew?

Post by sansouci »

While readying my 6 for the winter, I looked carefully at the battery. I found some white fluffy stuff in the battery tray which was from acid overflow. But from where? So I pulled the small DieHard battery which had 2 small holes on either side of the case. Upon further inspection there was a baggie glued to the side with a small plug and an "el" and instructions to plug one side and use the "el" for a vent line.
I found some green plastic tubing from my father's oxygen service that fit just fine. I routed it to the rear of the engine compartment so that any discharge would not fall on any important components. Any idea what this oxygen tubing is made from?

I next cleaned the battery tray with baking soda and then degreaser. Most of the original paint is still in there, but there are several spots of bare metal.
What is the best paint/coating/treatment to use? I was thinking of black frame paint in a rattle can which supposedly more chip and wear resistant.

Any thoughts from the crowd?

I found a can of Rustoleum Matte Black BBQ paint that was thick and heat resistant. I used also used an industrial hair dryer periodically over two days to ensure it was dry before I put in the battery. I also noticed that with the CTEK MUS 4.3 that it tended to deplete the water in the cells. So every 3 months I recheck the battery water levels.
