Clutch Neutral Safety Switch on E24?

Post by Bellwoods »

Hello All

Can anyone tell me if a 1988 E24 (635csi) with manual transmission should have a neutral safety switch that prevents the car starting unless the clutch is depressed? I am trying to get my vehicle safety checked: One mechanic says this switch is defective another is telling me that there isn't one.

To add to the confusion, I do find a clutch switch (PN 61-31-8-360-421) that is described functioning to disconnect the cruise control when clutch is depressed - could that same switch also be for starting?

Thanks in advance.

Only the Auto had a Neutral Safety switch. Clutch pedal switch is for the Cruise control.

Time to find a better mechanic.

Could a malfunctioning clutch/cruise control switch cause the car to lose power intermittently when the cruise control is engaged? How do I test it?

The switch turns the cruise off when it is pushed. Cruise is a manual throttle pull process, when initiated.

I wouldn't think it would cause engine hesitation, I guess it could rev more or less.

I would check your Bell housing sensors and connections or fuel or vacuum leak.

But the said part is a $10 part replace it and see...

There is also this switch PN-61311362809 make sure you have the correct one for your car. Not sure what year they changed to the plastic switch.

Also with Cruise issues you can check your speed sensor in the diff...
