Occasional lurker here and decided to register. This is my '85 M635Csi that I brought back from basket case status, with a few tasteful mods.

Figured out the attachment thing, rather than having to use Photobucket with their ugly watermark.

M88 head, with a E34 3.6L valve cover, shortened 7mm to fit. Done to be able to use direct ignition.

Welcome and Nice build, GCR!!

Tell us more about this build please? M88 you say? With an e34 valve cover? Did you go to a double row chain? How much fuss was the switch to direct ignition? Tell, TELL!!!

Keep the shiny side up

Phil

PS welcome to THIS particular corner of the madness!!

Thanks :)

When I pulled the motor and transmission, I did not expect that I would embark on such an in depth build. I basically wanted to refresh the drivetrain after many years of slumber. The more I looked, the more things I found that bothered me. A new timing chain had been rolled in, without replacing rails or the crank gear, which was badly worn. Orange RTV had been used to seal the cambox, and the dual valve spring update had not been done. Decided then to do something a little different, and used a friend’s e9 tribute build as a template. To put it in a nutshell, here’s what we did:

Stroker billet crank- 86mm.
Scat rods and CP Pistons- 1st oversize.
Megasquirt MS3 Pro Management system with direct ignition.
System uses a cam and crank sensor, VAC throttle position sensor, intake temp/pressure sensor in the plenum, and a wide band exhaust sensor. Stock cams, but we played with valve timing, and of course, the dual valve spring update.

As the car had sat outdoors under a magnolia tree for many (Approximately 9) years, it wasn’t very pretty, cosmetically or mechanically. The saving grace is that it is rust free. Suspension was redone using Synchro Design control arms, all new steering stuff, st box mounts reinforced, Koni adjustable front struts and Bilstein HD rears, BMW Big Red Motorsports springs (Now NLA). E28 M5 front sway bar with brackets and a Racing Dynamics adjustable rear bar was installed. Brakes are E32 V12 front, E34 540i rears. Clutch and hydraulics replaced, cooling system all new, pretty much everything mechanical that needed attention, was attended to. Interior refreshed, and the period Denon head unit and amp was retained. Speakers were rotted and were replaced. The car was painted long before I got it, and a good pressure wash with a bleach/water mix cleaned off the black mold. I had paint correction and GTeqnic ceramic sealer applied and am happy with the result. Figuring about 15% drivetrain loss, I figure a touch over 370hp at the crank. It’s quite fun to drive.

Edit: Forgot to mention, did not convert to dual row chain. Thought about it, and then figured at 1-2k miles a year, it going to take a long, long time before I need to go in there again.

Would you mind showing how you laid out the COP's under the E34 cover? Or more accurately, where did you shorten the E34 cover to make it fit.

I’ll have to take some photos of the underside of the valve cover when I remove it to check valve clearance. I’ve put about 3k miles on the motor since the last valve clearance check and 4K total since it was assembled. Was planning on re-checking it soon anyway. Basically sectioned it just behind the oil filler cap as the difference in the M88 and S38 cambox length is at the front of the cambox, to accommodate the dual row chain setup. E38 coils and longer spark plug connectors were used, I forgot the application on the connectors, but have the part number written down somewhere.

Nice work.. I grappled with how to attack the issue of older ignition that for me is simply weak and unreliable as I plan tot drive quite a bit. For the sake of simplicity (or so I thought) I made a titanium bracket that holds LS coils.. Not the most elegant, but will hold me over till I do a custom center rail like PMC racing in Australia does for the GTR. I would like to use GTR coils in the future.

Your photo bucket photos are out of focus now for some reason.. You can always upload the photos onto the server here.. Much better than the hosting services out there.

Photobucket started their shenanigans with blurring out the photos, unless you pay a monthly hosting fee. I have since migrated my photos to Imgur which seems to work well for me. I may re-post those Photobucket ones.

Bonus pic, a very nice e9 that belongs to a friend and client of mine. Came in for a little bit of setup, valve timing adjustment, valve clearance, ignition timing and synch the 3 sidedraught Webers........

Wow, both beautiful cars. On the E24, how long did it take you to restore it?

Sorry for the late reply. For some reason I can't reply to this post on my iPad. It keeps telling me to log in when I'm already logged in. On my PC now.

The resto took about 2 years. The car stood in the corner of my shop for about 7 years under a cover, the old story of the cobbler's kids having no shoes. . I had been buying parts for all those years that I knew I was going to need to the project, glad I did because many are NLA now. I finally got started when I moved my shop to a new, bigger building and had space and time to begin the work. The engine work took some time, including the sourcing of a custom billet crankshaft (That's a story for another day) and the machine work. I have all the parts receipts squirreled away, and I'm not sure I want to total them all up because I know I spent far more then originally envisioned. But that's how restorations work, at least that's what I tell my customers. :D
