M6 Radiator shop drawing
Anyone out there that might have a shop drawing that would allow a specialist shop like http://www.proalloy.co.uk/ to make me a custom alu radiator (based upon part #17112226018) for my 01/1987 M6?
I purchased a new BMW/Behr rad two years ago to stop a leak that kept me from driving the car for assessment. I have driven less than 500 KM with the car and I pulled the rad this spring to do some major work. While sitting, it's been leaking. I checked that the leak was not coming form the mid-mounted inlet but coolant level was below this. Upon closer inspection, it is leaking at the side plastic pod, about two inches from the bottom of the matrix. Most annoying.
I was hoping to sort this with a custom, replica, all aluminium radiator but the folks at P.A. need a detailed pattern or an original rad. It would be prohibitive for me to send mine to the UK from Canada and I was hoping someone may have detailed information. Pro Alloy have done some amazing work for a friend of mine and I would like to have a proper piece built.
Thanks,
Brian

Hello Jay,
Interesting.... I'll have to see if I can get some firm info on an alternate replacement from the dealer. Do you know if it was BMW part or aftermarket?

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
Its interesting Jay, I've never seen an all metal e24/e28 BMW rad before. How much did you pay for that?

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
Wow, two interesting options.
jps635 - All that Wizard Cooling rad needs is two sensor ports and it's GTG.
ron - I've asked my contact at Pro Alloy for a price per unit and at what quantity a price break would occur. Will post details when I get them.
Thanks folks,
Brian

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
You guys want to spend money?? Go to Ron Davis Custom Radiators in Phoenix Az. He makes a very unique single row radiator with approximately 1.2" oval tubes in it that cool unbelievably well in our AZ summers which can get as high as 122. The cost IIRC correctly are in the $800 range. I know a fellow who tracks an early E28 and say the car barely gets past the mid zone. If nothing else check his sight out. There is another manufacturer I came across while surfing around that makes these as well. What you are looking for are oval tube radiators. They are all metal and besides, you shouldn't have a problem finding one on the internet that is all metal with the proper bung(s) for sensor)s_
Worse case scenario is buy the Wizard or what ever fits and go to your local welding shop and have him tig weld a bung into the side tank. Problem solved for $25 plus the cost of the bung which, if nothing else, I am sure can be found on the internet in 20 minutes.

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
The Wizard for my 86 US 635 had the 2 bungs for the sensors.
Bungs will have to be welded for auto trans cooling lines.

Wizard will customise. I got them to leave the temp sensor bungs out of mine.

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
I look forward to hearing what their best price is
Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
We have had a reply from Pro Alloy on the radiator. If any interest, I'm quite happy to co-ordinate a possible group buy.
Maybe someone could post this on the E28 M5 forum?
Prices as follows:-
Hi Brian / Hi Ron, hope all is well.
I have the pattern M6 radiator which has arrived safe and sound, many thanks for packing it all up for us. I’ve had a good look over this and it’s not a horribly complex task to recreate, I’ve also managed to get a slightly thicker core to work within the outer dimensions, so there will be a helpful capacity increase without changing any of the mounting features. As we have discussed I have based a quote on some options of build quantities, these break down as follows:
Qty x 1 £589.70
Qty x 3 £530.73 ea
Qty x 5 £501.25 ea
I propose to finish the radiators in satin black powder coat as per OE, and if you wanted us to install fan mounts / electric fan etc then we’d be happy to do this. The OE Viscous fan could be replaced with a Spal 16” electric fan if desired, not essential of course but the option is there. Adding a fan would be an extra £99.00 per unit and would be installed on purpose made alloy mounts.
The prices above are exclusive of delivery and vat, and we would need approx 5 weeks to complete the first order. Please let me know how you wish to proceed with this project and I’ll be happy to get things underway.
Kindest regards,

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
Rather costly to start with, but with delivery and then VAT on the whole lot, I’d say far too expensive (for me at any rate).
Just my 2c

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
Great minds think alike, Ron
I saw these two on ebay........
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/42MM-CORE-Ra ... #vi-ilComp
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alloy-Radiat ... 1438.l2649
£185 and £215 - maybe you'd have to get a couple of sensor ports welded in, but the second one appears to have some down on the side?

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
I bought a Wizard radiator for my 89 635 and sadly it didn't fit. Had the radiator in but didn't have enough room for bolting on the fan.

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
Is the point of all this to have a super cool radiator, that also doesn't leak. Or is concern about future leaks after replacing the big issue?
I ask because when mine went bad, I decided the Wizard was too expensive, as it doesn't necessarily cool WAY better, nor do I have a track car. I drive "normally", and just need a well working radiator thanks to an upgraded, high flow fan. The OEM unit I bought from FCPEuro.com is an exact fit, and it comes with lifetime warranty for just under $300. Also, if it ever does fail FCPEuro will send out a replacement for free. Dollar for performance, the OEM route just seemed like much better value.

Re: M6 Radiator shop drawing
I agree with Jose. The OEM radiator works well, I've had mine for a number of years, when driving it only goes up 1/3 and usually in traffic the temp gauge goes to half. When I decided to get the Wizard Aluminum radiator, it was just piece of mind of not having the neck snap off as the OEM radiator ages but unfortunately there was not enough room to bolt on the fan with the radiator in first and didn't want to go with an aftermarket electric fan. Only if I would have had a 1/2 inch more but it is what it is. Also the aluminum ones do look good.
