1983 633csi interior parts/tech help needed

Post by WhidbeyShark »

I need a replacement drivers side door handle (not the latch for opening the door but the pull handle for closing the door) for my '83 633csi. Mine has cracked near the electric mirror controls. I tried to attach a photo here but not sure this forum has that capability. Can anyone out there help me locate a tan handle? Big thanks!

Also, my fan heater blower fan speed control switch only works on high. Is there a nifty fix for this? If not, I also need to replace this blower switch and would be very grateful for recommendations on where to locate one.

Cheers!

When posting a reply, look down to the "Attachments" tab. There you can upload appropriately sized images.

Fan heater blower working in high speed only is a well known problem with the transistor and relatively easy fix. Do a search as there's plenty of references.

Thanks for your reply. It took me about 40 minutes to figure out how to gain access and participate in this forum which is to say...I am not terribly savvy when it comes to computers. Can you send me a link or more specific help for this easy fix? Much appreciated!

Are we sure that he's not talking about this transistor?
This was the problem for my 1984 633csi when the fan would only blow on high. It's easy to get to and an easy fix. The new transistor was less than $3.

I've replaced this twice now. Second time I made more effort to get good heat conduction paste to help with the cooling.
It's been years and seems to be good the 2nd time around.

Piggybacking on the blower motor thread:
I replaced that transistor only to have it blow again. So I replaced it again using thermal grease (good thing I bought a 5-pack). I also installed a new Bosch fan motor, since the shaft was not spinning freely on the original one. This time the fan worked on all speeds for a few minutes. Then it went back to working only on full.
Did I get a run of poor quality transistors (2N3771), or is there something else going on here?

Make sure you buy from a reputable electronics supplier such as Mouser, RS Components, or Element 14 etc. There are many "knock offs" around on Ebay and such of disputable quality.

Thank you for that advice! I ordered 2 of these from Mouser, and they were visibly different from my eBay sourced parts. Not only that, the one I put in actually worked! So now I have a spare.

Lessons learned from this fan motor and transistor exercise:
1. Get the transistor from a reputable supply house.
2. Before removing the fans from the shaft, make a careful note not only of how far apart they are from each other and the motor, note the relative rotation of each one relative to the other, since they are balanced together. I failed to note the latter, and I can't run my fan higher than 3/4 speed now.
3. Be very careful with the boiling water technique! Scald burn to my hand set me back $175.
4. Don't press too hard on the fans trying to get them on the new shaft if they have cooled off. I cracked on of mine and had to glue it back together.
5. Given the age of the plastic and the difficulty of getting everything back together, if I had it to do over again, I would just buy the whole fan and motor assembly.
