BBS RC090 finish selection opinion

Post by rhanley 635csi89 »

Hi All,
We're wrapping up the respray of my 89 635CSiA, see photo.  The car, Alpine Weiss II with Havana Brown Buffalo leather comfort seats, complete with rear headrests.  Wheels are 2 piece 17" BBS RC090.  Tires Front 225/45R17.  Rear 255/40R17. The wheels are being refinished by Paul Ehrlich.  The plastic faces/caps and hubs will be replaced with an aluminium replacement which allows powder coating of the webs, faces & caps resulting in a uniform color on these components. The lips/hubs will be polished aluminium with a clear ceramic coating.
I am asking for your opinion on the finished color combination. (1) BBS gold on webs and faces/caps or (2) silver on the webs and faces/caps..  Lips and hubs will be polished aluminium with clear ceramic coating.

The attached photos are a representation of the various combinations.  Your candid comments will be appreciated.  The dirty wheel is from my car.

I'm considering leaving the rear license plate area "white" in lieu of usual "black" in the USA. See photo, what do you think?.

Thank you in advance.
Roger

I would go for the all silver finish of the wheels, looks fantastic.

And the area around the license plate looks better in black in my opinion, but that is a matter of taste.

Plus one on the silver with polished lips =D>

As far as leaving that back panel white as opposed to the traditional black, think I would need to see it with the lights and bumper installed, plate on as well, before making that decision :-k

I am a fan of a slightly darker grey center with the polished lips. Definitely grey, and not gold though.

I think all white would look very clean. Black would really stand out, and I think matching white would look better, even with the spoiler.

Thank you all for your input,This group is so helpful and great to work with.

I'm going silver.

Brickwhite, I had purchased these SS caps for my car. Now that I have a better understanding of the finishes available for the BBS RC090 wheels, I'm not going to use these. I'm going with the a powder coated silver finish on the webs/face and re-placing the plastic with extruded aluminium.
The hubs shown in the photo below are stainless steel and off of a Lincoln Town Car. The hubs fit over the BMW hubs perfectly, they're about a 1/8 taller than the BMW. If any one has interest in these let me know.

IMO you made the right choice with the silver.
A few years ago I restored a set of BBS RS061s for my Zinno E28 and had them done in BBS Gold; they looked terrific but later I regretted my decision because they had too much of an "aftermarket" look on the car. Silver has a cleaner, "factory" look which becomes more appealing as these cars age and become classics.

I'd keep the rear white, especially if your state has plates with nicely contrasting colors. And even if it doesn't.

Thanks to everyone for their input. This photo represents the final product for my 1989 635 CSI, Alpine Weiss II.

What do you think? At times I think it's just to much bling.

I'm still on the fence regarding the following and would appreciate your comments.
BBS logos per photo or BMW logos?
Valve stems standard (typical) or BBS stainless $70. for four.

Thanks, Roger

That looks fantastic! =D>

I think at least some bling really sets the car off (do not cover the car with a reflective wrap!)

For that reason I think the stainless stems would be very nice. I like the roundel, so I vote for the BMW logos.

Again, very nice!

Gud Gawd

Wow, now that's some polish job =D>

Think I would opt for Roundels as well, or maybe even the old school Motorsport Roundels, which I was lucky enough to find, a few years ago :-"

That kind of bling is just what the 80's were all about! I remember a guy in town had a red m6 with polished BBS wheels back in the 80's. It was badass.

Great work!

Wow, those are pretty. Either BBS or BMW roundel would look great. Paul did a great job, what was the turn around time and the final dimensions on your wheels? Thanks

Thank you everyone for your input.

Going with BMW roundels, BBS valve stems and silver as shown in the photo.

The wheel in the photo is not of my wheel, however, mine will look like that with a BMW roundel. I'm a visual individual and find it much simpler to state "that's what I want" once I see it.

Paul has been easy to work with and intents to turn everything around in two weeks.
He had one of his employees pick up my wheels in Wake Forest NC., he's outside of Charlotte NC., he'll have them delivered as well, $100 charge.
Paul will also be removing the anodize from the front and rear bumpers and the rear and front windshields trim pieces.  They will be polished and a clear ceramic coating will be applied.

My 17 inch wheels are 2 piece RC090 non staggered.  Info on hub 80x17H2  IS20 ?. I'm not sure what that means in laymen terms. I've attached a photo of my wheel. Hubs and caps need to be clean up for the new wheels.

The 17 is obvious, the rim size. The "is" ( usually is "et") is the offset. The 80 may be 8" width, but that's a guess.

Thats what I said. Sometimes (usually) it's listed as "et", which is a contraction of the German "einpresstiefe", which means pressed-in depth. Some wheel manufacturers, like BBS, list it as "is". It all means offset.

I bought the Lincoln center caps from Roger and can say they are totally "tits" A few minutes on my buffing wheel and they polish up great and look fantastic over the style five centers.

Mine are polished aluminium rims with the centres and caps sprayed Nagarro grey, match my metallic grey paint and look fabulous. To my mind the only colour combination for these wheels.

Just a heads up on the RS waffle conversion - there's a fine balance between having the hex caps tight enough not to back off of the wheel, and having the grub/set screws have enough grip on the inside of the wheel. I ended up on the wrong side of that balance with my hex caps spinning the inner ring inside the wheel when I tried to remove the hex cap, meaning that I couldn't remove the waffle to get to the lug bolts. Had to destroy the waffles to get my wheels off which was a waste of a fair bit of money.

I had Paul Ehrlich build me a set of 3-piece RC090 wheels in 17x8 and 17x9 in sparkle silver with the RS waffle conversion - fortunately the sparkle silver is very close to the BMW silver which is the color of the Style 5 center caps I put on after I ruined my RS waffles. YMMV but just be aware.

EDIT - pics are reversed, the bottom is the 'before' pic.

Cheers
Kevin
