Special Tool 11 2 100

Post by Hefeweizen »

Does anyone know if that one is available at the dealer ship or is there a special trick one can use to keep the fly wheel in place? We need to remove the timing chain cover.....

IIRC it is a piece of plate with a few holes in it that allow it to be bolted in position, and some pegs that engage with the flywheel.

I have one suitable for an auto (it came with a broken and unreparied car...) and had BMW recent packaging.

I don't think they can be very expensive and it wouldn't be difficult to make one either.

cheers

You're looking for the crank pulley holder in-order to remove the crank nut?

Here is the one sold by Skyway Tools, $81 :

I've heard of people putting a socket on the hub nut and then cranking the starter, but I can't find the posts now. Others have put the car in gear and held the brakes. Not so sure about either of these methods.

The nut is torqued to 325 ft./lbs. Most nuts come off with little problem, but others ... well not to scare you, but here is one saga of removing the Hub Nut (it's on an S38, but it's the same nut - scroll down to "Hub Nut"):

Here is a Guy renting all of the tools needed to get the crank nut off, the hub holder, a machined 36mm socket and a torque multiplier and adapters, $50:

Thanks Chris! I sent the guy a PM and that should get the ball rolling. My son dropped one of the screws into the timing chain housing...

Have you tried one of those flexable retrieving tools with the magnet on the end?

Just wondering, would it have fallen through to the oil pan?

Tried the magnetic retrieval tools and did not get a thing out. We don't really know for sure if it is actually in there. He said he dropped it and it fell in. While he was trying to get it, he also derailed the chain on the bottom and now it is stuck there. So we do have to take it out. While I am doing that I also change out the timing chain.

Somehow I must have missed the part with putting the car in gear and apply the brakes. Guess I am going to try that tomorrow. Before I do that though, does that 36 mm nut open clockwise or counterclockwise (when you look at it from the front)?

Must be CCW ("lefty loosey") if they've successfully removed the nut by applying a wrench braced against the frame or something and cranked the engine, since the crank goes CW when viewed from the front.

Thanks Hornhospital! Wow, that has been a blast from the past and you caught me there! I am a big advocat for closing out posts and here I am being guilty of the very thing I do not like at all.
