Tight ride height on my Euro 635csi

Post by Jays635 »

Okay - I finally have my ride height on my Euro 635csi the way I want it. I installed a set of M-Tech springs lower the height but I also instaledled a set of E90 front strut plates (drop hats) for additional 13mm drop and used the thinner upper pad on the strut (3mm) as opposed to the stock unit. The part numbers for the outcome are listed below:

Front M-Tech Springs: 31332225645
Spring plates (Drop hats): 3133674093
Upper Spring pad: 31331128523

Overall the distance from the center hub to the top of the fender arch is 13.75 inches just like my rear. For me this is perfect in look an function. Check out link for images

I'm curious about these parts also, the number: 31332225645 , doesn't show up in RealOEM or BMWfans. What are they? :-k

this is a front coil spring short 'red' as found here

http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E28/S ... il_spring/

BTW all the non-'M635/M6' Bilstein and most M-technic parts are found as options on various E28 models, so don't appear in E24-specific parts searches.

cheers

The E90 drop hats are the top mounting plate on the strut assembly. In essence you are exchanging the e24 stock drop hat( top mount plate) for the E90 version. This creates approximately a 15mm drop over the stock set-up.

Whoops! #-o I pasted the wrong part number, I meant to paste the number 3133674093 "drop hats". I can't find it when I do a generic search (no vehicle selected).

But you do raise a question on the Springs: what is the difference between

"Coil spring short red" - 31 33 2 225 645

and

"Coil spring short" - 31 33 2 225 646

They both say "Only applies to m technic "?

I have yet to sort out in my mind which are the M Technic Springs for the Sixer. Some say the M635 and the M Technic Springs are the same, but I keep reading conflicting info.

I don't know the difference between the two springs; the whole subject of BMW springs is savagely complex.... I looked through an ETk trying to fathom it and failed. By the time I'd finished I'd found approxiamtely 45 part numbers that might fit a 6er. Even allowing for the different models, front/rear etc it is still a lot.

I note that even the extra weight of air-con sometimes necessitates a different spring to be used.....

And then there are the mounting pads.... arghhh

-as the French say,

'c'est un casse-tete'

or something like that....

Yes there a number of different ones. The key really is to use one that someone has already tried, likes and works. In some cases those other springs are not available. I remember that when I was trying to obtain the euro m-tech front springs we waited forever ( 7+ months) and then finally the e28 m-tech option was presented. Definitely a good move.

or something like that....

you are quite right, finding a set-up that gives good results on an otherwise identical car is a good move....

Re Chris's query re the difference btween M635 and M-technik springs. I don't know about the fronts, but the rears have to be different, since the coil diameter is different.

The Bilstein and M-technik parts that are most applicable to standard 82-89 6ers are those which are fitted to the E28 M535i and E28 535i for the most part.

Okay yes my original part number for the e90 drop hat is missing a digit. The correct BMW part number should read: 31336764093. Sorry for the confusion

Jay:

Do you know what the spring rate is for the M-Tech springs you installed ?

What did you do for rear springs ?

Could you post pictures of your entire car so we can see the entire stance ?

Thanks.

Jon currently my Euro Six is at the Body shop getting a fresh coat of paint. When it returns I 'll be sure to get some shots of the car posted for you to see. With regards to the rear I went with the short red M-Techs that match the front set. I do not have the part number with me so ( out of town on business) I cannot provide that information. These springs are the ones that are commonly used and referred to by the members of the MyE28.com
