Replacing Tachometer

Post by 603racing »

The tach is starting to act up and I am contemplating replacing it. Are there any quirks with these e24's I need to know about before doing a swap?

I've swapped a tach in my e30, pretty easy work. Is the e24 going to be the same basic process?

First check the batteries on the SI board as the Tach gets its info through the SI board. Also check that the batteries haven't leaked over the traces on the board.

Getting the cluster out:

If you do change the Tach, remember to swap the original coding plug from your old e24 Tach into it.

I'll take a look at the board. Getting everything out will be easy, the gauge pod is the only part of the original dash still in the car. It's just held on by one metal strap and a bold to the roll cage.

It's the same basic idea, but takes longer to get at, that writeup covers it well!
