M88/3 Timing Chain parts purchase

Post by wattsmonkey »

I'm assembling a list of all the bits I need, but here's a funny thing:

Part #27, the top timing chain guide for the single-row chain part#11 31 1 306 603 is NLA.

According to BMW it has been superceded by part #11 31 1 308 550, which is the part for the twin-row chain. This seems odd to me, but I have not removed the old part to establish how the underside fits, so maybe the deeper guide does the same job.

Either way, removal of the rocker cover reveals wear on my existing guide, so it's Hobson's choice.

I'll post a full list of parts once I've bought them all!

Cheers,

Rob

Interesting. I look forward to hearing more about how the replacement part actually fits.

Have you found any other parts that are NLA?

Do you plan to upgrade to the later style tensioner assembly? I'd recommend it.

Also, will you be swaping the parts out with the engine in or out of the car?

Sorry for all the questions, but it is something I need to start thinking about as well.

Thanks,

Eric

Have you actually purchased the parts yet? I've been looking into this for some time and wonder how your pricing is going?

Don't forget about this tech article on the s38 chain replacement, it has a parts list too (although it is for the twin row chain):
viewtopic.php?t=155

It would be interesting to see how the pricing stacks up on this online site even though I don't think they ship out of the states:

2 months ago i got every single component for a single row chain and the only part thats really a pain in the ass is the exhaust cam gear, its restricted for the american market and you need proof of ownership and a couple other things before bmw will sell you one, because my euro chassis is destroyed by rust and i am not titling it i had to find someone with a euro car to order it for me, "shits worse then ordering a coded key" -the dealer tech that got it for me. ill see if i have the parts list with the part numbers somewhere, if i can find it ill post it up, with all of the coolant hoses, head and conversion gasket sets and a radiator its about $2500 worth of crap all at smoking deals and or wholesale through my connections, it could run as much as a grand more depending on who and where for the same pile of stuff

i see you are in the UK, that outta kill the problem with the exhaust gear

I am trying to keep some sort of a grip on expense and am considering NOT replacing the intake/exhaust cam sprockets as there is no sign of wear, which will save approx ?250. Without replacing these, the cost of all of the important bits should come in at under ?1,000.

I will post the details once I've bought the bits, which should now be end of July.

I've perused the tech guides article a number of times: I'm very much hoping that the "big nut" doesn't need the dremel treatment!

Yes, have decided to go for the M3 tensioner upgrade.

All parts priced up, will happily email excel spreadsheet of the "where I am now" position if anyone wants to pm me an email address (everything except the inlet/exhaust sprockets is on there).

Cheers,

Rob

winfred,

There is the part description on the left and obviously the part # on the right. There is a single digit # in the middle, is this the quantity needed or part of the part #?

Thanks,

Eric

I was thinking that if two or more of us got together, we could probably cut a better deal

its not that bad, if you don't have or wanna make a holding tool stick a block of wood so that it wedges between the crank and inside of the block, don't hold your breath on a 1/2" drive breaker bar surviving but sometimes they work, i use a cheapo 3/4" bar and it pops them fine and it can handle a jack handle/piece of pipe for leverage without exploding

heavy equipment helps too 8)

Thanks Winfred, I love the use of the fork lift to keep the thing from tipping over! I'm going to attack the nut with engine still in car (mounts are ripe for replacement in any case).

Will certainly be buying a 3/4" drive breaker bar: I got lucky with 1/2" bar doing the wheel bearing collar nuts with much scaffolding pole attached, don't fancy anything snapping that close to my wings!

Pod: sounds great, but I know Motormec couldn't offer any discount over dealer prices; not sure how amenable BMW are to haggling but will certainly put the question their way (I've already factored in the 10% club discount), unless you've got any contacts of course.

Cheers,

Rob

You've got it in one! I just wished to see if anybody else was interested in getting together with a view to a bulk buy. I'll send you a PM

Will have a chat to my contact to see what he can do regarding a group buy. Do we have any idea on how many sets of parts required?

1:- Rob.
2:- Paul (Pod).
3:- Ron.

Anyone else interested? Please send names.
They are ALWAYS rustier than you thought!!!!!!

Looks like we've got things moving on this side of the pond. Rob's sending me a spreadsheet for price comparisons and I'll have a look at the American site which Chris mentioned. Even if they don't ship outside the US I'm sure something could be arranged

As Ron says - anybody else? The more the merrier and the greater the potential discount we can achieve (God willing [-o< )

I am certainly willing to help if needed on getting parts from the US to the UK. Just let me know. Don't know if I can join the potential group buy at the moment as disposable funds are a little low at the moment, so don't put me down just yet, but don't count me out either.
