New Shark Wrangler

Post by PhoenixOp »

Greetings everyone. Just bought a 1985 635CSi (1/85 production date). I also own a '91 850i, so am not new to BMW eccentricities. The 850 broke me in the hard way, yet I came back for more by buying the 6...

I will probably have a boat-load of tech questions and probably some operational questions as I don't have an owners manual (there's a shock) and where I should post either.

I started wrenching on cars in the mid 60's, so grew up on American muscle and original Mini's (owned 8 at one point). The 850 was my first BMW.

Any help would be appreciated.Thank you.

Well, you've landed in the right place, the best and most complete E24 6er only website in the world =D>

Regarding your questions, just be specific, and post in the correct forum, and you'll get your answers, usually in a jiffy :wink:

But, we need to see some photos as well :shock:

The Gallery is perfect for that purpose :lol:

Welcome:

here's a start on building your library:

Here's another source:
http://wedophones.com/Manuals/BMW/

You might have to buy an OM on eBay, so keep looking.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and a seperate thank you to those of you who pointed me in the right directions. Somehow in all of this, I get the impression that the e24 is an electrical nightmare. Please say it ain't so. I thought my 850 was en electrical nightmare, it has wire bundles as big as your thigh...
Ok, I exaggerated, but it's still mind bogling.

I'll try to get some pics up tonight. I "think" I bought, if not the best e24, then at least not a junker either. Usually on middle aged BMW's the shortest list is what works, in this case the list of things that don't work is the shortest. So far, it' the fog lights, temp gauge, passenger headrest, right front running light and the MID (OBC) looks like somebody hit it with a hammer. That's pretty much it. All new suspension goodies, belts, brakes and an engine reseal, except for a little inspection plate on the back of the head, which I have the gasket for.

All this grief, anguish and stress for the grand total of $2800.00 all in to quote David Beckham.

Thanks again all. Hopefully, by hanging out with smart people, I'll get smarter.
See ya

No, your 850 far surpasses the 6er as to wiring complexity. In fact, you'll wish you were working on the 635 when the eventual electrical gremlins appear in the 850. (and they will)

Ken;
You are so right about that. Soon to be done projects on the 850 include but are not limited to, sunroof, both seats, a headlight, and both throttles. Last time I drove it it brought me home in "limp home" mode. But it's soooo sexy.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't kick the 6er out of bed either. After 3 attempts, I did get a few pics posted. I'd appreciate some feedback regarding all those spoilers and air effects gizmos stuck all over the car. Since I'm not familiar with 6's, I don't know if they are good or bad, as to performance and/or value

I know BBS used to make a decent wheel which is what is on it, but again is this a plus or minus?

The interior is kind of a junk yard. The front seats look like a family of water buffalo spent most of their lives in them, they will need to be completely re-done. Headliner looks like crap. Back seats are salvageable. I'm going to post a pic of the steering wheel that doesn't show up in RealOEM for this car, maybe someone can ID it.

Thanks again to all for your kindness.

Greg;
If I did it right, they are in the Gallery where all the pics are under New Shark Wrangler.
Let me know if I screwed up again and for some reason they are invisible, folded, spindled or mutilated.

See ya

Welcome to the madness! Looks like you found yourself quite a nice sample. I'm a proud owner 4+ years now and I ask most of the newbie questions around here. lol. Your tan on black is probably my favorite color combo.

Noct;
Thanks for the welcome. As for the madness, my first BMW EVER is my '91 850i. Now there's some madness. I've liked the 6 series from it's predecessors, (3.0CS). E24's and E31's are my favorite BMW's, except maybe an M1. So I'm very qualified as the newbie dumb-a**.

Thanks again,

See ya

Ha. Well you sound quite knowledgable about cars in general. I'm able to chime in at this point about 6er specific issues I've dealt with here with the help of these kind folks... And give the newbie perspective. Anyway welcome aboard. BC is a great forum in part because BS is little tolerated and folks like to have good time.
