Will a late (1987) exhaust fit my early (1982) car?

My 82 is in need of exhaust replacement. There is an 87 at the Boneyard with cat gone but resonator and huge muffler intact. Will that larger, squared muffler fit in the provided space in my 82?

the mountings are different on later cars, and the way the tailpipes poke through the 'world' bumpers is different too. To be sure you need to go by exact build date, not 'model year' BTW. 82 and 87 build dates were both 'big change' years.

cheers

My build date is 10/1981. I don't know the build date of the 1987 Car, but the bumper appeared to be the same as mine.

you have a car with an E12 chassis there. The exhaust is different and changed 5/82. It changed again 6/87.

If you have a US model then it might well have similar looking bumpers but that does not guarantee that all the other parts will fit. Very few parts do fit between pre and post 5/82 built cars.

The rear silencer box should fit in the gap between the spare wheel well and the fuel tank but all the mountings are different.

If it is cheap enough and you are prepared to cut, weld and modify then it might make a good buy.

cheers

I figured as much. I think I'll be happier with a new one that uses my original mountings. I appreciate your info re: cutoff dates.

I went to a small indie muffler shop.
They fit a free flow system with 2&1/4 inch pipe I think, with an after market muffler & a cat.
Buster has a nice low, throaty rumble.
You'll die laughing at Midas' prices! Don't waste your time there.
I had to guide them through the job 'cause I needed the forward pipe inside the rearward pipe to copy a free-flow system.
Around $350, I think. Maybe $300? I used them for the same thing on my '73 2002.
This way, they'll use your original hanger area, but, then, I'm not a purist!

I found a guy near me who will order the correct parts, maintaining the original appearance and sound. $750.
