Fog Lights - has anyone upgraded those?

Post by Tommys 89 635 »

I've been using 100 w Osram bulbs for a long time but thinking about a whiter fog light bulb. Our bulb housing is small and rectangular so I don't think there are many options. The LED bulbs are round and too big to fit through.

Has anyone upgraded their bulbs to a whiter bulb?

TIA

I'm a big fan of yellow if you're really driving in fog. 100 watts is a lot to be pumping into those small housings! I assume you've relayed them. That said I've swapped some of the fleet over to Cree yellow LEDs.

A lot more lumens per watt than incandescent with much lower power usage and heat generation. Lots of temperature options on the net if you want a specific part of the spectrum, just double check and buy from a source that lists all the dimensions and align with what you know fits as there is still some pretty dodgy manufacturing out there and not all H3 fitments are created equal.

Actually I did not add a relay, the housing on my 89 are H1. I ran those for probably over 20 years and they've done well but I guess over time they lose their brightness. I don't drive in much fog but I wanted a whiter light so I think I finally found some. The Osram H1 55W cool blue, sticker notes that these are Off Road. Output is a whiter light, not sure if I would consider these off road lights but I think they compare well to the newer vehicles.

I was wondering if they might be H1 instead of H4. I'd still look at LED. You should be able to try 2 or 3 different color temps for the same price as what your advert shows.

There's a relay for the fogs in the circuit. Page 6312-0

My first choice was an LED bulb. I ordered one and was excited to try it but then the housing on the LED bulb was too big and did not fit in the H1 Fog light housing. I supposed I could have used a Dremel to modify the H1 housing but decided not to. Never know, in the future I may if I have a spare housing. I did find an LED bulb that did fit but only had I recall 4 LEDs on it and it wasn't that bright (probably for looks only). Take a look at the LED bulb on the link you sent, the round housing part is too big and will not fit.

I put LED H1 bulbs in the R100RT pop out light - the 2 wheel beemers - and they work great. Nice bright white light. My shop is down off Whipple if you want to stop by and yack.

Been off this list for a few years..just getting back in

Finally got around to taking a picture at night with the new fog light bulbs. Matches the head lights (hid) pretty well.
