Mystery spot in the toolkit box

I have always thought that there were two types of tool boxes mounted in the 6 series, old one as shown below:

and the later one:

I have this one in my 1988 635CSi, it has the spot for the emergency window tool, which some peaple replace with small socket wrench (part no. 71111181418), like here:

However, in my 1980 628 CSi I have different tool box, comparing to the older one it has two additional spots, one is obvious (for part no. 71111150191) but I can't figure out what goes into second one...

Does anyone know what should be placed there? Both emergency window tool and the socket wrench do not fit...

Have a look on eBay as they pop up regularly, Early Mercs used the same..

hah I've got one! there's plenty of them on ebay, when I receive it (together with original big screwdriver I've found few weeks ago) the toolkit will finally become complete!

FWIW the 1988 kit is missing the towing eye. It is also missing the long 3mm allen key that is used in the emergency window winding procedure.

In fact the '1988' kit tray looks like a pre 6/87 tray; IIRC the post 6/87 tray has a special hole for the towing eye.

cheers

the slot circled in red is for an emergeny tool for the windows. It fits over the "stem" from the motor and attaches by an allen screw in side of it that is turned with the long skinny tool with the Allen head at the end. That tool in itself fits in the handle of the small screw driver. It has a hex in the middle and I think the spark plug wrench or the 19mm wrench should turn it. The first tray is an early tray for a non sunroof car and I would bet for a car with manual windows as it doesn't have a place for the emergency windows or the "Z" shaped sun roof tool

I swore I had one of those (plastic emergency window cranks) in my 89 tool kit but don't see it. Does anyone had any extras they are willing to part with?

Not to rain on your parade, but the emergency window tool is still incorrect/missing, the emergency sunroof tool is missing, unless you have a non sunroof car, and the blue cloth is not the proper color blue to be correct.

His tool tray doesn't appear to have the recess for the sunroof tool. It should be between the pliers.

ken, color of the cloth is right on but the material isn't even close plus where is the logo. I reproduce these as original and have for the past 8 years.

It seems like the plastic emergency tool for the windows is if possible to buy, is there another tool/socket that would work in it's place?

In response to Bert's response, the early tool kits indeed had an aqua colored cloth, and without the BMW Roundel logo \:D/

But it also appears that there were more than just 2 versions of tool kits out there :-?

As you can see in the photo, I also have the early foam in the upper left hand corner which shows the old school fuses, but also the lower left hand compartment cutout for the mystery tool :-k

Tommy, lemme look tonight, something tells me that Ralph in SoCal gave me a couple, will surely pay it forward if I have one =D>

Correctomundo Bobbo. But there are two different aqua cloths. One with logo and one without. Definitely for an early car. Foam is correct. Your tool kit, other than the color of the cloth, matches mine 100% which is all mint, correct, original tools

Thanks Bert, my tools are indeed correct, original, and minty fresh, even after 38 years \:D/

But all of this actually brings up yet another question, for Flex :-?

Flex, your first photo shows a different tool tray, which does not have the space for the "mystery tool", nor does it have the clips along the front edge for the long hex drive, which I also thought was part of the manual window crank setup :-k

You can see in the other photos that the trays are indeed different, me thinks that the VERY early trays were for cars that did not have power windows, and therefore did not need a space for these special tools =;

I actually need to look in my owners handbook tonight, I gotta see what is supposed to be there, from the factory [-o<

And not only that, Ken shows us that in some versions, there's a Z-shaped hex tool as well

That I don't have, but I don't have the clips in the tray to install anything there either [-X

Tommy, looked last night, don't have anymore of the "mystery tools", might want to check with Ralph in SoCal, that's where I got mine =D>

Speaking of which, I need to take a new photo, my shot doesn't even show that I have it installed #-o

This has intrigued me since I got the car.
My 10/81 car has a tool tray with the indent for the emergency manual window adaptor but I believe that the window regulators have that part fixed permanently to them.
It also has a foam bulb/fuse holder for blade fuses but the car has bullet fuses fitted.
Now the foam insert could easily have been replaced in the cars lifetime but I doubt that the tray has been .
There therefore seems to be an anomaly as to what tray was fitted to which year of production.

Other than the missing "window tool" and the wrong foam, your kit is correct. I have sold many, many tool kits over the years and I can tell you for sure the foam has been switched out. The fact that you have red handled screwdrivers validates that it is correct with the exceptions I mentioned. My car is a 5/81 euro and I spent a lot of time putting the kit together and learned a lot along the way

It's the plastic piece in the second photo to the left of the wrenches
and above the single bulb.

You shouldn't need one Don. Your window motors will already have the manual override fitted.
