I usually push outward on the plastic nuts. Loosen until they're almost off then push outward evenly with controlled force. The studs are in a reinforced area so the lens (unless deteriorated) will not break.

You don't need the gauge set but you need the vacuum pump. System evacuation is critical to removing moisture. You want to evacuate for at least 30 minutes to make sure all moisture is removed. Best upgrade for the lower control arms are e31 (8 series) as they're aluminum with needle bearings instead of a bushing.

Those thrust arm bushings with the green inserts are aftermarket HD type. I think Meyle and could be E32 fitment. Get a measurement of the bushing thickness.

I'm working an E12 so it's different. Mine has 2 screws at the top holding the panel in place. I can't remember the e24 mounting as it’s been a few years.

The Ball Joints do last much longer than the bushings so lots of replacement bushings available. BMW does not supply replacement ball joints so aftermarket is the only option.
