Re: Tried new treatment for the black bits

I wish the previous owner(s) of my E30 had used something like that instead of semi-gloss black paint. :(

Re: Parts suppliers

So true. My buddy Eddie is usually the parts ordered for our projects. Pelican was his "go-to". Several years ago he said he'd noticed he could no longer get a parts desk person on the phone that knew jack-squat about the parts they sold as had been the case earlier. Their stock answer now...

Re: Starter motor won't crank engine

My 1984 633 developed a reluctance to starting, that is, the starter wouldn't spin the crank. The solenoid would engage, but the starter would spin slowly if at all. It had the symptom of a poor ground. I took the starter off and cleaned the contact area between the starter body and bellhousing. Tha...

You are absolutely correct. They have ONE nut on the near-side mount and NONE on the far side. I call false advertising. The studs aren't even through the mounting holes on the far side mount!

You know, normally when I see you've posted another update I get excited and eager to see what you've been up to, but this one made me queasy and sad. :( I'm glad you're going ahead with repairs. So many would just give up and part the car or, worse, send it to the scrap yard. Good luck, Song. I'll ...

Try Leatherique Rejuvination Oil and Prestine Clean. (Those aren't spelling mistakes. That's how Leatherique spells their product names). Great products. Recommendation from personal use.

Re: Mason Engineering - Strut Bar's..

The photo on the Mason website is so dark I can't tell for sure, but I believe the Mason bars are solid, no "hinge" bolts between the mounting bases and the center bar like the one you linked. There is much debate among strut bar users whether the hingeless design is stronger. I have some ...

If you regularly (every couple years) flush and refill the power steering system, you don't really 'need' the filter and associated parts.

Re: Mystery Silver Relay (what does it do?)

Have you tried the wipers with that relay pulled? It reminds me of the wiper/delay relay in an E30.

Edit: but I see you have a wiper/delay relay already, lower left in the shot of your fuse/relay box.

I was going to suggest regular CLR, but I don't know if it would work any better than the "Multi-Use" version. I've never used that version, only the full strength CLR, and I've had good results with it.

Some enterprising person needs to get a set of these covers, scan them, and start making them with a 3D printer. There is definitely a market for them, since we see "want to buy" postings for them all the time.

Re: 1985 635CSi E24 - Rough Idle & vacuum hose kit

That line going to the driver's compartment is supposed to connect to the ambient air temperature sensor on the under-dash panel. It draws air past the sensor, and the sensor feeds the ambient air temperature info to the climate control system, adjusting the heating or cooling accordingly.

If you are DIYing it, you might consider adding a heat sink like this. I believe the factory heat sink/mounting plate is borderline inadequate.

Re: Brake reservoir to master cylinder gaskets special tool need for install?? (SOLVED)

Pelican and FCP Euro have been my go-to parts sources for many years, but within the last two years I've gotten more wrong parts than correct. And every time, even after consulting with their tech support, it's been the parts numbers they agreed were "correct", ones retrieved from BMW TIS ...

Re: Wanted: Dinan E24/ M6 Strut Brace

I don't have strut bars on either E24, but have them on the 95 M3 and one of my two E30s. The difference was most noticeable on the M3, but I expect that's because the E36 front end is more limber than the chunky E30. Both of them are solid bars, no joints. I have a jointed one on the 318 E36, but t...

Believe it or not, this one is as strong or stronger than the Dinan. Notice it is solid. No joint between the mounting ring and strut bar=no undesirable flex. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-QMS-Performance-Strut-Brace-for-BMW-E24-Front-Black-Racing-Rally-SALE-/184503560443?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_tr...
