Can you tell how delicate user has to be with the buttons? Are they prone to catch dirt from fingers (it is still some, right)?

Typically the plug should be fine. There is no corrosion visible.

You might also check if any of the pins is not bent or made flat after some time of usage. It happens.

You can try to check if the item from E23, E21 or E28 will not fit the shape. That would be the cheapest option.

CHECK system measures the current flowing through "Check Relay" to respective bulbs.

It provides feedback to the Check Display.

If the current is not big enough it will not activate the reed relay and thus report bulb error (too less current => no bulb)
