That'd be an intermittent open circuit, not a short, but I agree about checking connections. Rule of thumb, if the system will spin the engine at normal cranking speed, the battery-to-starter connections are fine, and the battery is probably good enough to get it running if you get fuel and spark. The part number you listed is definitely not for the passenger cabin temperature sensor. The correct part number is 64 11 1 369 828. Get ready for sticker shock when you look it up. That mounting pad is in compression if the car is jacked up by the differential housing. That's no strain on it at all. The way it gets wrecked is when the car is accelerated hard.
