Electrifying classics? Is a 635CSe the future?

Post by Jlc »

The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article on electrifying classic cars. I found it an interesting idea, especially the guy that does a "no cut" restoration and swap so a car can be returned to its original state. As much as I like petrol, is this the future way to keep classics on the road and not the scrap heap?

I like to drive a petrol engine as long as possible. Here in Europe in many cities it is nowadays forbidden to drive with older diesel cars. Next step will be older petrol cars I'm afraid.

When that day comes, and it will, I'm sure that a lot of companies will start providing conversion kits for classic cars.

Nice example that Mercedes, an import car from The Netherlands, it still has the original NL sticker next to the license plate.

Not sure this is a great way to go. I like the idea of adding an electrical flywheel like the Vonnen chaps do for the 911, adding 200hp or so to the factory engine with an additional 80kg. Expensive thou

My electrification project is still underway. I've pivoted from my original plan of using a single motor and some extra batteries I had available to going with dual motors and Tesla battery modules. I too am using Moment Motors for various components, but after seeing the quality of their work and examples like the white Merc, I started looking for coins in my couch and everything else I could do to let them do a much a possible. I will update my thread soon with the latest progress.

I have finally got around to documenting my conversion. Rather than do it in real time like I started on the forum, I'm sharing updates once or twice a week on Instagram. I'm up to my 8th post if you want to follow.
